KAI KORAI PRI MARY
SCHOOL
N e w s l e t t e r
A very special welcome to Lucie Hol tz, Toby Hebden, Phoebe Bell and
their families to Kaikorai Primary School!
PRINCIPALS MESSAGE
Dear Parents,
Regular school attendance has a very important
correlation to student achievement. Studies
have also established that a lack of commitment to school and
truancy are risk factors for substance abuse, teen pregnancy,
delinquent behaviour and school drop out. The routines and
expectations that parents establish when they are at primary
school have a profound effect on childrens attitude towards
attendance when they are teenagers.
Attendance is important but so also is punctuality. 10-15 mins
late each day doesnt seem like much but the child misses out
on important morning messages and over the course of the
year they will be away from school for an additional 2 weeks.
Last term we noticed that our rate of non attendance
increased from 90% in terms 1 and 2 to 75% in Term 3. The
Governments target is 90%. The increase was largely due to
a virus that went through the school and we thank and
encourage all parents to keep their child home when they are
sick.
Kind Regards
Simon Clarke

SCHOOL NEWS SYNDI CATE NEWS
Middle News -
The value for this term is KEEN. We are keen to learn and keen to take on new challenges.
Tirohanga here we come! We are all really looking forward to our overnight trip at Tirohanga next week. The children are
writing their own risk management forms and really thinking about how to keep themselves and others safe while
participating in fun and challenging activities.
We plan to use our time at Tirohanga as inspiration for our learning across the curriculum, especially in Dance, Drama and
Music. We have already begun looking at the skills involved so that we can share our experiences through the Arts. Thank
you to all the parents who have volunteered to help.
A couple of reminders
Room 3 and 4 will need to bring a container of home baking.
Room 5 and 6 will need to bring a family sized pie or pizza.
Children may also like to bring a pair of gumboots.
This Term we have started Syndicate Sport on a Tuesday afternoon at 2:15 (Wednesday if its wet). Classes will learn the
skills involved in T Ball, Touch and Netball through the week with their teachers and then practice these in a game situation
with each teacher. We will be outside and ready to go on the courts at 2:10 so feel free to come along and join us. T ball and
Touch will be at the Nairn St Park and Netball will be on the courts at school.
Junior News
Welcome to Term 4. This term has begun with a hiss and a roar. For our inquiry focus this term we are looking
at CHANGE. We are looking at many aspects of change including transport, toys, clothes, communication
and change as in seasons / weather and changes in animals / insects as they grow. Famous inventors that have
made a change to our world is another focus as well.
We hope to have a Grandparent afternoon in November, the date is yet to be arranged.
Swimming notices have gone home and we now need all the permission slips to be back so we can give Jill
Clarke numbers. Please check that you have returned yours.
Our science Friday afternoons have begun. We are swapping classes to learn about oating and sinking,
magnets, making sounds and lots of other wonderful hands on science activities from the material and
physical world part of the science curriculum.
For our PE programme we do a lot of running and moving and so we ask please that girls leave their wee slip
on fancy shoes and jandals at home and wear sensible shoes that can allow easy movement.
Senior News
It has been an excellent start to the term with science, swimming and athletics all featuring strongly in our class
programmes.
As part of the school-wide theme of Change, the senior classes have started the term with investigating the chemical
properties and chemical changes that are part of understanding the substances that we nd in our homes. So far we
have been testing these ingredients to see if they are acids or bases. We have also experimented to neutralize an acid or a
base, and even changed an acid to a base and vice versa.
The children are working with a partner and being challenged in their skills of observation and recording their ideas.
They are learning to discuss and record information accurately, using scientic vocabulary and labeled diagrams to
explain their ndings. This has been linked to our reading programmes where they are learning about scientists and their
discoveries.
They are enjoying these lessons very much, and will soon have opportunities to conduct their own investigations into
substances that they are wondering about.
As well as science, we will later be exploring the ways in which people can change, and effect change, by looking at
personal challenges and interactions with the environment.
SCHOOL NEWS
Headlice
Head lice has been circulating in some classes so
please help us stop this epidemic by checking your
childs hair regularly and treating it if needed. We do
recommend that girls have their hair tied up and off
their face during school hours.
If your child comes home with a letter or pamphlet
about headlice it is important that you thoroughly
check your childs hair and treat if you nd any eggs
or lice.
Please contact the school if you require assistance from
our fantastic Health Nurse.
It takes the whole school community to
eradicate headlice and it can be a very
expensive and frustrating for parents if one
child is left untreated.
Walking School Bus
The Walking School Bus operates every morning and is a fun, healthy, safe and environmentally
friendly way for children to get to school - and it means that parents dont have to deal with the hassle
of the busy trafc around the school and trying to nd a park!
Everyone is welcome to use the Walking School Bus which leaves from the corner of Highgate and
Belgrave Crescent (just along from Roslyn Kindergarten) each school morning at 8.20am. Children
can also join the bus along the way.
If youd like to try out the Walking School Bus just come along one morning.
