DESCRIPTION: The course is an introduction to theory and practice of
nursing leadership and management as applied in the
delivery of health care. This deals with the application
of concepts, principles and theories of leadership and
management as applied to clinical practice.
The course is designed to facilitate understanding on
key skills employed by nurse leaders and managers
and their development of critical analytical thinking in
evaluating and interpreting management challenges
and practices

TERMINAL COMPETENCIES:
At the end of the course, the students will be able to:
1. Discuss the role of leadership in professional nursing practice
2. Discuss historical development of leadership and management theories and the
influence of these on nursing management.
3. Evaluate leadership and management principles in nursing roles
4. Demonstrate knowledge of leadership and management principles related to
nursing practice
5. Describe the components of successful team building
6. Discuss the relationship between delegation, motivation, and leadership
7. Identify types of organizational structure and implications of each for nursing
leadership
8. Perform a self-evaluation of dominant and preferred leadership styles
9. Describe the components of leadership in times of change
10. Discuss the relationship of change, conflict, and communication
11. Discuss the components of coaching, mentoring and staff development and their
relationship to effective leadership
12. Identify accepted methods of evaluating change, such as outcomes management
13. Demonstrate leadership abilities and competence in the delivery of health care
14. Utilize concepts from leadership and management theories and the nursing
process in the care of clients
