Onion Extract as Antibiotic: Proposal

This research proposal aims to determine the effectiveness of onion extract as an antibiotic. The study will compare the recovery rates of guinea pigs treated with various amounts of onion extract versus a commercial antibiotic. Onions contain compounds like allicin that have been shown to have antibiotic properties. Over three weeks, the study will conduct trials using guinea pigs to evaluate the effects of onion extract doses from 15ml to 35ml compared to a single tablet of commercial antibiotic. The results will help determine if onion extract is a viable and cheaper alternative to commercial antibiotics.

Introduction

A. Statement of the Problem

General Problem:
This study seeks the possibility of using Onion extract as an antibiotic.
Sub-Problems:
1. What components does an onion have that it can be an effective
antibiotic?
2. Is there any significant difference between Onion extract and the
commercialized antibiotic?
B. Significance of the Study

Many people will surely benefit from this project not only because it
is cheaper than the commercial one but also the risk of side effects is
lower. Big production of these products will enable Filipinos to
lessen their expenses with regards to antibiotics.
C. Scope and Limitations
This project focused only on developing the extract of Onion as an
antibiotic. Tests will be conducted using the Onion extract product to
prove that this will be an effective antibiotic. Only guinea pigs will be
used to prove this product.
D. Objectives
General Objective: This study aims to find out if the prepared
product/onion extract is an effective antibiotic
Specific Objective: This study aims to find out if there is a significant
difference between the effects of the onion extract/prepared
product and the commercialized product.
E. Review of Related Literature
Onions (Allium Cepa) not only provide flavor, they also provide
important nutrients and health-promoting phytochemicals, , most of
which are hydrocarbons and their derivatives. These include:
Dipropyl disulphide (which is used as a flavour compound), Allicin
(which has antidiabetic, antihypertensive, antibiotic and
antithrombotic activities), diathyl sulphide (which is of insecticidal
property), Dimethyl disulphide (which is used as a gas odorant and in
chemical synthesis), Mercaptopropane or propylmercaptan (which is
used as flavour compound). Onions also contain quercetin, a
flavonoid (one category of antioxidant compounds). Antioxidants are
compounds that help delay or slow the oxidative damage to cells and
tissue of the body. Studies have indicated that quercetin helps to
eliminate free radicals in the body, to inhibit low-density lipoprotein

oxidation (an important reaction in the atherosclerosis and coronary

heart disease), to protect and regenerate vitamin E (a powerful
antioxidant), and to inactivate the harmful effects of chelate metal
ions. ("Onion Health Research." All About Onions. N.p., n.d. Web. 02

Antibiotics are a group of medicines that are used to treat infections

caused by bacteria and certain parasites. They are sometimes called
antibacterial. Antibiotics can be taken by mouth as liquids, tablets,
capsules or by injection. ("Antibiotics. Side Effects & Types of
Antibiotics | [Link]."[Link]. N.p., n.d. Web. 02 Nov.

B. General Procedure

The extract of onion can get by chopping it into smaller pieces. Then, place the
water and cloves of onion in a saucepan and bring it to a boil. Remove the pan
from the heat. Stir in the honey and lemon juice. Lastly, strain into a warmed
teapot. Sip half a cup three times a day. You may drink it hot or cold. Refrigerate
the remaining tea.

C. Data Gathering
Equipments will be needed to know the effect to the guinea
pigs.
