KEY QUOTES
CABIN COUNSELOR
“[Maren] spent extra time getting to know the kids really well and was excellent at getting to know them in a meaningful
way...She was supportive of campers and counselors alike, even campers not in her cabin felt at ease confiding in her. Maren
was great at verbal support and encouragement...totally a joy to have in the section, like Mary Poppins, Practically Perfect.”
Laura Perkins, Senior Section Head

TRIP LEADER
“Maren, I can’t thank you enough for all you’ve done for me. Your encouraging words and cheery attitude help me even when
I’m at my lowest. This trip was really hard for me—I almost gave up multiple times—but all that you have told me has kept me
going. Thank you!” Leigh Cooper, 14

COACH
“Ultimate! It was off the chain this year. Can we say awesome? Seriously, it was mad fun and Maren was the best coach ever.
We had hard core practices all week...to prepare us for a game against Forest Lake. We came out victorious.”
Danielle Thomas, 15

PLANNING
“Wouldn’t Whip Be Tipped if Maren couldn’t plan anything at a moments notice.”
Whip Yearbook, 2004

ACTIVITY LEADER
“I very much appreciated your flexibility to jump in to activity areas when needed, and in the trip program as well. The confi-
dence and independence you work with is truly what makes our little camp work well for campers.”

SUMMER 2000
Camp Counselor
LIVING THE DREAM
I wanted to be a camp counselor from the moment I set foot at my first camp at age eight. I spent my childhood
acquiring a checklist of skills that I thought would make me an “awesome” counselor. However, nothing could have
prepared me for my first summer. Living with junior high students, being on 24/7, and balancing being cool with be-
ing in charge are all skills that i found had to be learned through experience.

MY LIST OF REQUIRED ATTRIBUTES IN AN AWE-

SOME COUNSELOR, AGE 8
Be able to french braid
Maintain a memorized arsenal of friendship bracelet patterns
Full mastery of handstand
Have cool penmanship and stationary
Be friends with the boy counselors
