The Demand for Maritime Personnel
The labour situation within the maritime sector is a topic that attracts much attention worldwide. Many fear we are entering a period where
a massive shortage of qualified personnel can, among other factors, represent a possible threat to both quality and safety standards. At the
same time, customers, authorities and other stakeholders constantly increase their demand for higher quality, precision, safety and corporate
social responsibility. Based on this complex situation, the maritime industry worldwide is expected to have a strong focus on recruiting new,
qualified personnel in years to come.
High Quality Training: a Necessity
For ship owners and operators, competence is the key to safety, reliability and economy. Safety reduces the risk of injuries to personnel and
minimizes the risk of damage to the environment. Reliability minimizes the ever increasing cost of being off-hire. A well-run cargo and ballast
operation managed by competent people improves economy. Onboard training using real equipment presents a number of challenges.
Increased risk to personnel and equipment combined with limited access to required marine assets and related escalating costs are creating
increased demand for simulation technology. Simulation under highly realistic circumstances presents a safer and more cost-efficient training
alternative. Simulation has already proven its effectiveness and is, without doubt, the future of maritime training. Due to the almost unlimited
possibilities provided by simulation, better results can be achieved in a safer, more efficient manner, which in turn produces higher quality
personnel.

The Need for Simulators in the Maritime Industry
Different tasks different needs
Investment in maritime simulators is no longer limited to just the
largest academies and organizations. Todays simulator customers
represent a broad mix of different organizations, from public training
academies and universities, training centres and vocational schools,
to shipping and oil & gas companies, as well as military training
organizations including Navies, Coast Guards and Maritime Police.
Accordingly, cargo & ballast handling simulators must be flexible
to meet the users various needs. Simulators today can be delivered
tailor-made, ensuring that both functionality and cost meet the exact
requirements of the user.

Competence saves money & environment
The importance of process understanding is crucial for optimum cargo
and ballast handling. Proper simulator training is an effective way to
build crew competence. Competent personnel work more efficiently
through reduced off-hire costs, and achieve higher productivity with
lower risk of environmental damage. To avoid negative learning, it is a
necessitythatthesimulationtrainingishighlyrealisticandadaptableto
real life situations. The latest maritime simulation technology provides
impressiveintegrationbetweencargohandlingsimulatorandrealvessel
control systems, which gives a new level of realism, as crew can train on
exactly the same equipment that they will find onboard a real vessel.

Educating the best personnel
Compared to conventional training, simulators offer a more structured
method of building high levels of competence. During simulation
training, one can isolate and freeze each sub-system to understand
and acquire knowledge, perform critical operations over and over
again to train skills, and test and develop attitudes by training in
situations that demand complex decision [Link] the use of

areas requiring improvement and support the development oftailormade exercises. In this way, the training will focus on bringing out
the best in every student.

most realistic and effective training possible. To meet the present and future training needs in the maritime industry, we have developed
the NEPTUNE cargo & ballast handling simulator, which is the result of detailed studies that have defined the optimum solution. NEPTUNE
provides high fidelity real-time simulation, supporting unique education and training of personnel. Through the use of physical models,
NEPTUNE real-time simulation models are completely integrated to produce a domino effect on adjacent subsystems. Faults and
alarms will have cascading effects throughout the system if not acknowledged properly. In addition to an extremely high level of realism,
the NEPTUNE cargo & ballast handling simulator offers user-friendliness and flexibility, key features for providing high levels of instructor
control and greater variety of course offerings capabilities demanded by shipowners and training institutes worldwide.
NEPTUNE Cargo & Ballast Handling Simulator
The worlds most advanced simulator
Behind the NEPTUNE cargo & ballast handling simulator lies an
investment of more than 140 person-years of development.
This major investment has resulted in the most advanced cargo and
ballast handling simulator available in the market today. NEPTUNE
builds competence from the ground up by providing the most realistic
depiction of cargo & ballast handling operations. In order to learn the
complex load and discharge operations, NEPTUNE simulators enable
high quality training in every aspect, from single sub-systems to the
overall running of a loading or discharge operation. Simulating the

From desktop to full mission systems
KONGSBERG is dedicated to making NEPTUNE available to as many
users as possible. The NEPTUNE cargo & ballast handling simulator
is extremely flexible and can be configured from a PC desktop to
an operational full mission simulator using custom panels and ship
equipment. In addition, KONGSBERG provides an e-learning (webenabled) module and the possibility to use floating licences, giving
the training centre maximum value for money. With a full range of

Creating realistic training situations
We tailor your training facility to your specific needs and develop
training programs to meet your goals. To enable this, the NEPTUNE
architecture is extremely flexible, and can be used across a range of
different interfaces offering benefits in value, flexibility and realism.
In addition, we are able to integrate our NEPTUNE cargo & ballast
handling simulator with KONGSBERGs K-Chief, a real automation
system. This gives a new level of realism, as crew can train on the

of highly realistic models of different vessel types. Our desktop system
is based on the same core software for all configurations, and is ideal
for operation and process studies. The full mission systems offer a
physical familiarity with the real shipboard environment, and include
