CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOLS MUSIC FESTIVAL
Nearly 300 primary children and their families gathered at
the college last Thursday evening for the annual Catholic
Schools Primary Music Festival.
Pupils from Corpus Christi, Our Lady of the Rosary, St
Bernards, St Bonaventures, St Francis, St Marys, St
Nicholas of Tolentine, St Josephs, SS Peter and Paul and
St Teresas Catholic primary schools performed a
wonderful selection of traditional and contemporary songs
in unison. The theme of the evening was a Time to Share
and it was a truly uplifting celebration during this time of
Lent.
YOUNG WRITERS COMPETITION
THE POETRY GAMES 2014
Last term five students entered a poetry competition
where they had to write a poem on an issue they felt
strongly about. This included topics such as global warming,
war and the reckless youth. I am very pleased to report
that their poems were engaging and carefully crafted which
resulted in each of them being chosen for the special
anthology published by Young Writers. Congratulations to
Year 7 pupils Hal Hewlett, Shanaz Sharonsenthil and
Janina Parry Year 8 pupil Jules Samuels and Year 11 pupil
Riley Dolan.
A copy of the anthology, The Poetry Games- Southern
Poets, will be available in the library in June.
The next competition with Young Writers is called A Twist
in the Tale. Students must write an original story with a
twist using just 100 words. Closing date is the 4th April. See
Miss Barnes for more information!
PUPILS FLYING HIGH
Congratulations to Year 9 pupil Matthew Simmons and
Year 10 pupil Sebastian Smaka who have both been
successful in securing a cadet scholarship at Bristol and
Glos Gliding Club. Matthew and Sebastian both gave a
presentation before being interviewed and were delighted
to be selected. The scholarship Flying bursaries are given
to those who can demonstrate a strong interest in gliding,
aviation and learning to fly.
A fantastic achievement.
YEAR 11 GCSE TRIP TO BERLIN 6TH APRIL - 9TH APRIL 2014
Information packs have been sent by post this week,
outlining all the necessary details about the trip. Please ask
your child to see Mrs Lewis if they have not been received.
PART CLOSURE OF SCHOOL ON 26TH MARCH 2014
I sent an email last Friday alerting parents to the possibility
that pupils in Years 8, 9 and 10 would be requested to work
at home on Wednesday of next week if the threatened NUT
National Strike was to take place. A copy of this letter is on
our website. I will update parents with final arrangements
by Monday, 24th March. I regret the inconvenience this
part closure will cause to families.
The attendance record for children who will be working at
home will not be affected as a consequence of this
enforced absence.
PARIS TRIP
Year 8 and 7 pupils have
recently returned from a
trip to Paris. We were
really blessed with
glorious sunshine and
super pupils who really
appreciated seeing the
sights of Paris. It was a
very action packed trip.
We visited the Stade de
France, went to the top of
the highest building in
Paris and saw the Eiffel
Tower sparkling at night.
The Modern Foreign Languages Department are now
planning the next trip to Paris for the current Year 7 pupils
which will take place in March 2015.
DEBORAH ELLIS AWARD WINNING AUTHOR VISIT
We were fortunate this week to welcome Deborah Ellis
author of the international bestseller The Breadwinner to
speak with our Key Stage 3 pupils. Year 8 pupils Dominic
Britton and Kelly-Ann Steadman said:
Deborah read us
passages from The
Breadwinner and The
Prison Runner which are
based in war torn
countries and tell of the
horrors children face in
these countries. It was
an inspirational visit
that we wont be
forgetting anytime
soon.
LENT
This year we are encouraged to dig
deep and think about what we
could give up for Lent, how we could use our gifts and
talents to help those in need and how we could dig deep
inside our spiritual selves and be transformed during Lent.
In college there are many ways to become involved:
Monday 8.45-9.05 Voluntary Mass
Monday Break Meditation/Adoration in the chapel
Monday Lunch Leaders of Faith fundraising for Cafod
(Years 10-13)
Tuesday Break Mini enterprise stalls run by the
Faithworks team in the blue area
Tuesday Lunch Youth SVP
Thursday Break Fairtrade stall
Thursday Lunch Faithworks team in the Chapel
fundraising for Cafod (Years 7-9)
DANCE SOUTH WEST OF ENGLAND CHAMPION
Congratulations to Year 10 pupil Jessica Hehir Smith who
has been crowned the Under 16 Freestyle Disco (Solo)
South West of England Champion!
Jessica had twisted her ankle before she competed and
danced in a lot of pain to find out on Monday not only had
she pulled a ligament, but had also torn it because she
carried on dancing. An example of complete and utter
determination! Well done Jessica.
