Welcome to Grizzly English for the 2015-2016 School Year! My name is Mr. Haslam
(pronounced Haz-lum) and I look forward to working with each of you. Senior English
is a British Literature course. Therefore, most literature covered in class including
novels, short stories, and plays will be from British and international authors. Students
will also have to analyze, synthesize, and respond to informational texts.
Purpose - There are two main objectives for students in this class: First, to improve
writing and research skills in preparation for college, careers, and the world. Second,
to gain a better understanding of the surrounding world through the study of its
literature and culture.
Why Write? Effective writing and reading skills are as important for effective
communication as speaking and listening skills. They are not just a set of basic skills
people are taught at school. Writing and reading are an integral part of each educated
individuals life since they are the basis of written communication. Written
communication, in its turn, is another tool for people to express their ideas, and learn
about those of others.
Why Read? Reading skills serve as a foundation for writing. Developed and mastered,
effective reading skills give people the opportunity to learn new information about the
world, people, events, and places, enrich their vocabularies, and improve their writing
skills. Avid readers not only read and write better than those who read less, but also
process information faster. As a result, avid readers have a broader outlook, are
quicker to analyze facts and find connections between seemingly unrelated ideas. A
reader has better skills for comprehending, analyzing, understanding, responding,
and, finally, learning from what he or she reads. As a result, it is easier for good readers
to get used to new and unfamiliar circumstances or ideas. They are easier to
communicate with, and have higher chances to succeed in both professional and
personal life.

Attendance & Make Up Work
When a student is absent, they should check my website for the work that they have
missed. If the students absence is excused, they will have THREE days to complete
any make up work. Students will have THREE consecutive A Days or B Days to make
up work depending on when they have class. Students will have THREE days to get
their absence excused. IF A STUDENTS ABSENCE IS NOT EXCUSED, I reserve the
right to deny the opportunity to make the assignment up. Attendance School will not
count towards make-up work. However, students have the right to discuss any
assignment or absence with me and I will determine if the assignment can be made up.
If the teacher is absent, NO work should be turned in to the substitute.
Grading & Assignments
Letter grades will be determined on the following scale:
93 100 = A
90 92 = A88 89 = B+
83 87 = B
80 82 = B78 79 = C+
73 77 = C
70 72 = C68 69 = D+
63 67 = D
60 62 = D0 59 = F
Students need to be in class every day and they need to turn their work in when it is
due. I will be enforcing the Copper Hills attendance policy. If students miss three or
more days of class, they will receive a NO GRADE, regardless of their performance in
class.
Notebooks - Journals: Students will be required to keep a notebook of their work. This
should be a separate binder from all other classes because it will be turned in. Because
of all the work that will be stored in the notebooks, they will be worth a lot of points. I
will check notebooks every quarter. When turned in, notebooks should be organized
and complete with all journals, notes, and assignments from the year. Students will be
required to have divider tabs to organize their work.
100% of a students basic grade will come from the following:
- Novel analysis assignments
- Group projects
- Individual projects
- Tests & Quizzes
- Notebooks
- Oral presentations (includes reading or speaking in front of the class).
- Participatory activities.
- Daily participation grade (negative behavior will affect participation grade).
Student information, work, and grades will be kept confidential and will not be shared
without the necessary authorization as per FERPA Regulations.
Extra Credit: Students may receive extra credit by attending approved literary events
throughout the year. Events will be listed on both the board and also on my website.
To receive extra credit, students must attend the entirety of event, write a one-page
report, and provide pictures, programs and/or ticket stubs to the teacher. STUDENTS
WHO ARE MISSING WORK WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO DO EXTRA CREDIT.
Students may also receive extra credit for purchasing exact copies of the book we read
in class. They can receive additional extra credit for donating books when finished.
Electronic Devices: If I am teaching or there is work to be done, I should not see or
hear any cell phones. If a phone becomes an issue, you will receive a warning, followed
by the phone then being taken and given to the administration. If you have an
emergency and have to take a call, just let me know and you can step into the hall. You
may listen to music while working on regular assignments, but if I see your phone
during a test, it will be taken and you will take a zero on the test.
Restroom/Water Fountain Use: Students are expected to take care of this business on
their own time between classes. I do understand, however, that occasional emergency
situations will present themselves. We have a hall pass for this. Abuse of hall pass use
will result in possible limitation of excusal from class.
Food and Drink:
With the exception of water in a closed container, no drinks should
be brought into my classroom. I will allow the occasional snack for students to stay
alert as long as they dont make a mess and students clean up after themselves.
Particular care must be taken around laptops.
Communication: PARENTS!! Please communicate with me! Visit my website or
send me an email (refer to the top of this document). And please do it ahead of time. If
a printer is broken or something will prevent your student from getting youre their
work done, let me know ahead of time so that I can grade them fairly. Communication
after something is due will not suffice.
Plagiarism: Plagiarism on any assignment will result in a zero on that particular
assignment and no room will be given to make it up.
