Creating a Transparent Background in an Existing Photo

Open original photo with GIMP
Choose File/Save As
Save as GIMP XCF file type
Decide which selection tool to use (either Select By Color or Intelligent Scissors)
Select by Color
5. Click the Select by Color button in the toolbox
6. Set the mode to Replace the Current Selection
7. Click on one color in the photo to select it
8. Choose Layer/Transparency/Add Alpha Channel
9. Choose Edit/Clear
10. Select another color in the photo
11. Choose Edit/Clear
12. Repeat until most of the background is gone without loosing too much of the item
Intelligent Scissors
5. Click the Intelligent Scissors button in the toolbox
6. Click on the edge of the item in the photo that you want to keep
7. Continue clicking around the item until you reach the first point
8. Click on the first point again to close the outline
9. Click inside the outline you have drawn
10. Choose Select/Invert
11. Choose Layer/Transparency/Add Alpha Channel
12. Choose Edit/Clear

Quickmask Tutorial
1. Load the image
2. Make a rectangular selection around the edge of the image.
3. Click on the quick-mask icon in the lower-left corner of your image.
A red mask appears around your selection.
When you click the dashed quick-mask button
again to go back to normal selection mode,
anything red will not be selected, and anything
clear will be.
4. Play with the filter button to create the edged effect you desire.
Filters/Distorts/Waves for example
5. Add a blur if desired Filter/Blur/Gaussian (RLE mode)
6. Click the quick-mask icon again.
7. Invert the selection
8. Now fill the background color Edit/Fill with BG Color

Creating an Old Picture
1. Import Picture
2. Rotate and/or scale as desired
3. Make a duplicate layer Layer/Make a Duplicate Layer rename the layer to
Black and White
4. Change the new layer to Black & White Layer/Color/Desaturate
5. Change your foreground color to RGB (187,142,72)
6. Add a new Layer name it Brown Layer Mask
7. Fill the new layer with the RGB color (Whole image will look you have a brown
wall)
8. Add a layer Mask Layer/Mask/Add Layer Mask/White(Full Opacity)
9. Copy and paste the Black and white layer to the Brown Layer Mask
10. Anchor the layer
11. Invert the colors Layer/Color/Invert
12. Change mode to overlay
13. Save file with the .xcf extension
14. Merge the Brown Layer down to the Black and White layer Layer/Merge

15. Add a new layer mask to the newly merged Black & white Layer
Layer/Mask/Add Layer Mask
16. Using the intelligent Scissors, cut around the area you want to color.
17. Change the color to Black--RGB (0,0,0)
18. Fill the cut-out area with Black
19. Adjust the Color Levels
Now we need to add Grain to the Picture
20. Add a new Layer name it Grain Layer
21. Fill with a gray color
22. Filter the layer (Filters/Noise/Scatter HSV)

23. Change mode to Overlay
24. Tone filter down Filter/Blur/GaussianBlur with a setting of 1 for both the
Horizontal & Vertical values
25. Save as a jpeg, export file when asked to do so, changing the quality to 100
when asked.

Logo Creation
1. Create a new image. Rename the layer, Black-and-White
2. Fill background with black
3. Select the Text Tool click, choose the font color White and size
you need, then type in text
4. If need, select the move tool
, and move the logo to the
center of the document
5. Use a Filter/Blur if desired
6. Merge the layer down
7. Insert a new layer, name it Logo Background
8. Choose background color for our logo
9. Fill the layer with the dark color
10. Add a third layer, name it Plasma Letters
11. Select a color for the words themselves. You could try a cool
trick by going to Filters/Render/Clouds/Plasma set Random Seed
Value to the desired number, and Turbulence to 1.
12. Fill the background with the selected color
13. Raise the letters by using the Bump Map feature.
Filters/Map/Bump Map, Click Compensate for Darkening and
Select the Black-and-White text layer
14. Now we want to use a Layer mask to filter out everything but the
lettering. To do this, add a White (Full Opacity) layer mask to
our newly-created Plasma Letters. Layers/Mask/Add Layer
Mask. Copy and Paste the black & white text to the mask area.
15. Adjust the color levels, Layer/Colors/Level
16. Apply Layer Mask, Layer/Mask/Apply Layer Mask
17. Add drop shadow, run the Script-Fu Drop Shadow.
Script_Fu/Shadow/Drop-Shadow
18. Use the Crop tool to select the area of the Logo that you want
to keep then click the Crop button in the Crop & Resize dialog
window
19. Save the image as .xcf
20. Export the image to .jpeg
