Harper Family Design Statement
The Harper Family has decided to remodel their kitchen in the 1930s single story
home. The home was a former schoolhouse and they are interested a traditional look for
their kitchen that maintains some of the school house charm the home has.
The design that has been developed meets many of the needs and desires the family
would like to have in this updated kitchen. The cabinet layout is a U shape design with a
peninsula island and china display case that would sit above base cabinets which can be
used for storing collectable dinnerware and displaying collectibles. In the peninsula there
will be a second sink available for use as the Harper family has desired. Due to limited
space for a desired island the peninsula concept was found to be the best current solution
while still incorporating the many other functional features required of this design.
In the former space the dishwasher and appliances did not follow a traditional flow
pattern and therefore making appliances and tasks in the kitchen less functional. The
dishwasher has now been located next to the primary sink and will make for ease of use. A
tall pantry cabinet has been placed next to the built refrigerator cabinet and that will serve
as storage for brooms and mops as well as cleaning products. There will be multiple
cabinets for storage a child friendly organized cabinets for the children that will serve as
snack storage areas.
Energy efficient appliance will be utilized and a recycle pull out base cabinet will be
incorporated into the cabinet layout next to the dishwasher placement. With no current
natural lighting in the space the use of two skylights will also be installed to allow for
natural lighting during the day time, incandescent recessed lighting as well as cabinet
lighting in the upper cabinets will serve to illuminate the evening hours spent in the
kitchen area.
The color choices are a pastel blue and green which follow the favorite colors of the family
and will complete the country charm appearance of this redesigned space. The cabinet
finish will have an aged white appearance along with varying light tomes of solid hardwood
flooring. The counter material will be solid surface Quartz.
