PH101 Physics-I July - Nov. 2011

This document contains a physics tutorial with 5 questions. Question 1 asks about the height of an elevator when a marble is dropped inside and hits the ground. Question 2 asks about the relative velocity of two particles moving in opposite directions around a circle. Question 3 asks about the velocity and acceleration of a particle moving with constant radial and angular velocities. Question 4 asks about the direction and magnitude of jerk for a particle moving in a circle. Question 5 asks about the motion, radial acceleration, and angles where radial and tangential accelerations are equal for a particle moving along a spiral trajectory.

Tutorial # 1

3rd August, 2016

Q1

An elevator ascends from the ground with uniform speed. At time T1 a boy drops a
marble through a hole on the floor. The marble falls with uniform acceleration g = 9.8
m/s2, and hits the ground T2 seconds later. Find the height of the elevator at time T1.

Q2

Particles a and b move in opposite directions around a

circle with an angular speed , as shown. At t = 0 they are
both at the point r = , where is the radius of the circle.
Find the velocity of a relative to b.

Q3

A particle moves in a plane with constant radial velocity = 4 m/s. The angular velocity is
constant and has magnitude = 2 rad/s. When the particle is 3 m from the origin, find
the magnitude of (a) the velocity and (b) the acceleration.

Q4

The rate of change of acceleration is sometimes known as "jerk." Find the direction and
magnitude of jerk for a particle moving in a circle of radius R at angular velocity . Draw
a vector diagram showing the instantaneous position, velocity, acceleration, and jerk.

Q5

A particle moves outward along a spiral. Its trajectory is given by r = A, where A is a

constant. A = 1
m/rad. increases in time according to = /2, where is a
constant.
a. Sketch the motion.
b. Show that the radial acceleration is zero when =1/2 rad.
c. At what angles do the radial and tangential accelerations have equal magnitude?
