Welcome to Lifetime Learning!
Neosho County Community College, through the Outreach and
Workforce Developmental Department, offers an impressive
selection of educational and social opportunities for all adults,
with cost breaks for those 62 and older. With a purpose to
promote learning for the lifetime and continued intellectual and
personal growth for retirement-age individuals, NCCC has
become the place for fun, interactive learning in a safe and
encouraging environment.
We strive to draw from the interests, talents and experiences of
adult learners. Academic courses are college level (without the
homework, term papers and tests), and cover everything from
personal computers to fitness for life and visual arts. Social
activities include various gatherings for coffee, lunch, laughter
and entertainment.
NCCC values all of our community members and believe learning
is a continuous part of our culture. Come join us and see what
Lifetime Learning can provide for you!

Cheat Old Age: Keep Moving Forward!
Tara Solomon-Smith
Many of you are probably enjoying the Olympics like most households
this year. I read an article this week about Senior Athletes that definitely
inspired me and got me thinking about the need to increase my own
physical activity, now and ongoing! Seniors are training now for the
World Senior Games taking place this fall. Reporter, Lee Cowan,
interviewed a 90 year old woman, who has a title of being fastest in the
world in her age division and a 91 year old man who is only 14% body fat,
matching that of a 20 year old athlete, just to name a few.
We all know exercise is good for us in many physical ways, but it is
great for our brain health! Studies show that exercise actually increases
Brain Derived Neurotropic Factor (BDNF). This molecule protects
neurons from injury and facilitates learning and synaptic plasticity. With
age, BDNF levels fall and this decline is one of the reasons for impaired
age-related cognitive function.
While all of us want to enhance and maintain what we use today,
sometimes it is difficult to fit it all in. It is never too late to start, just ask
the now 98 year old Senior Game participant who didnt start running
until after age 50! Just keep moving.
