Particle Charge Test

This document describes an experiment to determine the particle charge of a bitumen emulsion. The test involves forming a circuit using a 12V battery, ammeter, rheostat, and two metal plates inserted into a sample of the emulsion. After 30 minutes of current flowing, the plates are examined to see if one has more bitumen deposition, indicating its charge. The result helps choose the right bitumen type for construction to ensure proper bonding between aggregates and bitumen.

Experiment number: 9

Experiment name: Particle charge test.

Aim of experiment: To determine the particle charge of a bitumen emulsion.
Relevant codes: IS 8887: 2004, Bitumen emulsion for roads (Cationic type) specification.
Relevance and importance: This test is performed to ascertain the particle charge of the
bitumen emulsion. Aggregates and sand particles used in the construction have an inherent
positive or negative charge and it is important to choose the bitumen type accordingly so that
proper bonding between the aggregate and bitumen is achieved.
Test description: By using a 12 volt battery, ammeter, two metal plates and rheostat a circuit
is formed. 500 ml of bitumen emulsion is taken in a beaker and the two electrodes are
inserted. After 30 min of current flow through the sample, the cathode and anode is
examined.
Apparatus required:

Current source, a 12 v battery.

Rheostat, 2000 ohm capacity.
Ammeter, 0.1 ampere capacity.
Stainless steel plates, two, 25 mm x 75 mm.
Glass container, 500 ml capacity.

Procedure: This test is carried out in the following steps:

1. Sufficient quantity of representative sample of bitumen emulsion is poured in to the
glass container.
2. Two steel plates were inserted in the sample to a depth of 25 mm and the anode and
cathode were marked.
3. A circuit is formed with the two plates, 12 v battery, ammeter, rheostat and switch.
4. The switch is closed to complete the circuit and the rheostat is adjusted so that at least

4 mA current flows through the circuit.

Current is allowed to flow throw the circuit for 30 min by closing the switch.
The circuit is opened after 30 min and the plates are removed.
The plates are wash with distilled water if necessary.
Both electrodes are examined for bitumen layer deposition.
