Impact Testing of Materials at Low Temp

This experiment tested the toughness of four materials (acrylic, brass, steel, aluminum) at room temperature and -20 degrees F using an impact testing machine. The toughness of metals increased when cooled, absorbing more energy, while the toughness of acrylic did not change with temperature. Steel had the highest toughness at both temperatures, while acrylic was lowest. In conclusion, decreasing the temperature increases the toughness of metals by making them harder, but temperature does not affect the hardness of plastics.
