INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES/ STUDENT OUTCOMES


1. Students will measure length by counting.
2. Students will organize their names based on length. .
3. Students will count and compare name lengths with classmates.

WV CSOs
[Link].1 Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight and describe
several attributes of a single object.
[Link].2 Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see
which object has more of/less of the attribute, and describe the difference. For example,
directly compare two children and describe one child as taller/shorter.
[Link].3 Classify objects into given categories, count the numbers of objects in each
category, and sort the categories by count. Category counts should be limited to less than
or equal to 10.
NATIONAL STANDARDS

MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK
Overall Time - 40 minutes
Time Frame 2 to explain what to do with blocked strips.
2 minutes for students to collect strips and write their names.
10 minute organizing on a poster board and discussion on lengths.
2 minutes to get strips back to their desks.
2 minutes to explain the group activity.
10 minutes for group activity.
2 minutes to explain writing activity.
10 minutes for students to write two comparative sentences.

STRATEGIES
Teacher led discussion, independent/group practice, project/inquiry learning.

DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION/ ADAPTATIONS/ INTERVENTIONS


Visual learners these students will benefit from seeing the shapes on the video and
teacher materials.
Auditory learners these students will benefit from hearing the song.
Tactile learners these students will benefit from singing the song and finding shapes in
the room. Also, drawing an object and explaining what shape it is.
Special Needs Options: - these students will benefit from the students finding shapes in
partners.
English as a second language- these students will benefit from having a partner and
being able to physically see the shapes from the video and teacher materials.

PROCEDURES
Introduction/ Lesson Set
To begin, the students will be seated on the carpet for the video and teacher discussion of
shapes. The teacher will have shapes for the students to see and will discuss how many
sides and points each shape has.

Body & Transitions


The students will stand in a circle and repeat after the teacher to learn the shape detective
song. After the students can sing along, they will be put into pairs. The teacher will explain
to the students that with their partner, they have to find shapes in the classroom. They will
recite the song as they search and must have a shape by the end of the song. The teacher
will then ask groups to share the shapes they have found with the class. (Repeat until every
group shares).
The students will then be seated at the carpet for the next activity. The teacher will lead a
discussion of objects and what shapes they are. For example the sun is a circle; the smart
board is a square.
Closure For the end of the lesson, the students will draw an object and write a sentence
to explain what shape the object is.

ASSESSMENT
Diagnostic: The students will be asked during the discussion to identify the shape the
teacher is holding. (The video will be help to those who are unsure in the beginning.)
(Objective 3)
Formative: The students will find shapes in the room and share what shape they found to
show their understanding. (Objective 1 and 2)
Summative: The students will draw objects and write a sentence to describe what shapes
make up the object. (Objective 4)

MATERIALS
Smart board
Computer
Cell phone and speakers (if technology fails)
Shapes for the teacher to hold for the discussion
Paper for the students to draw and write their sentence.
Tangrams (if lesson finishes early)
EXTENTED ACTIVITIES If Student Finishes Early
If students finish early they will use tangrams to create shapes out of shapes.
If Lesson Finishes Early
If the lesson finishes early, the students will use tangrams to create shapes out of shapes.
If Technology Fails
If technology fails, the teacher will use youtube on her cell phone with speakers to play the
opening video.
