Bridge Design for Engineers

This bridge project involves the design of 10 parallel girders to support a 30m bridge span carrying HS20 truck loading. Key details include a 15m clear width, 0.2m thick concrete slab, and A992M steel for the girders with Fy=345MPa. The summary calculates key design values like the maximum factored moment of 4195kN-m/m, chooses a W1000x371 girder section to resist this loading, and verifies the section satisfies strength and serviceability limits.

Bridge Engineering Project

Information given:

Bridge Span L = 30m

Clear Width = 15m
Live Load = HS20/4.27m
Sc/c =1.85m
Wcu = 24KN/m3
Wws = 23KN/m3
Fy = 420Mpa
Fc = 35Mpa
Wearing surface thickness = 0.07m
Steel type used for (W) structural shape A992M: Fy = 345Mpa, Fu =
448Mpa
The bridge will consist of 10 parallel girders as shown.
Design to be based on 2x106 cycles of loading.

Design Procedure

where S= Sc/c= 1.85

Assume girder weight and diaphragms = 1155N/m
WDC = 0.2*24 = 4.8KN/m2
WDC = 4.8*1.85 + 1.155 = 10KN/m
WDW =0.07*23 = 1.61KN/m2
WDW = 1.61*1.85 = 3KN/m

Mut = 1.25 * 1125 + 1.5 * 337.5 + 1.75(1116 + 187.5 ) = 4195KN.m/m
W- section is compact because of shear connectors so Lb < Lp

KN
Vut 0.9(0.6*Fy*Aw) = 0.9(0.6*345*19.1*1000) = 3558 KN
Where Aw = tw*d
Vut 3558 KN so section is satisfactory to resist shear force

Check Serviceability

Overall depth of composite section = 0.04*L = 0.04*30 =1200mm satisfactory
