Pressure Tank Sizing Guide

The document provides a formula and instructions for calculating the size of a pressure tank based on drawdown volume, pump capacity, number of starts/stops per hour, and cut-in and cut-out pressures. It then works through an example calculation using the provided data for a Grundfos pump to determine that the recommended pressure tank size is 500 liters, which is the closest standard size.

Project :

Calculating the pressure tank size

Pressure tank size formula is given as follows :

size = (

Drawdown volume
cut-out pressure - cut-in pressure
cut-out pressure + 1

Drawdown is based on pump capacity and the number of start/stops per hour and amount of
water which can be taken from the tank before the pump starts.

250 x Q
I

Drawdown in liters =

250 x Q x (cut-out pressure + 1)

I x ( cut-out pressure - cut-in pressure )

Tank size in liters = (

Where : Q is the average pump flow in m3/h

I is the number of starts/stops per hour.
cut in & cut out : pressure is indicated in bars.
