FAQ for Incoming Students

When does the bus get here and leave?


The bus arrives at school around 7:30 and leaves school around 3:20

Where do I park?
You may park in the west lot by the softball field or in the angled
parking in front of the school. If there are no free spots in either
location, you may park on a residential street south of the building.

What do I do when I need to leave during the day?


If you need to leave school, you need to have a parent/guardian call
the High School secretary and tell her when you are leaving and for
what reason. She will write you a pass. When it is time for you to leave,
show your teacher the pass and sign out in the office. If you are
returning to school, sign back in and we will write you a pass to class.

What is Opportunity Time?


Opportunity Time is a 29 minute period at the end of the day where
you sign up for various sessions with teachers. Sessions run for 3
weeks and you are placed in the session for the entire 3 weeks. You will
get to choose learning opportunities such as basic car repair, cooking,
money management, exploration of various historical events, and
many others! This time is an opportunity for you to learn things that do
not necessarily fit into the regular curriculum but you are interesting in
learning about. We also have a Mandatory Tutoring session for
students who are identified by staff as struggling with one or more
subjects and a Mandatory Study Hall for students who need to work
on missing assignments.

How do I check my grades?


You may check your grades in PowerSchool, our online gradebook
system. You can log into PowerSchool by going to the school website,
and clicking on the PowerSchool icon on the right side of the screen.

What sports/activities do you offer?


We offer football, volleyball, cross country, cheerleading (football,
wrestling, and basketball), basketball, wrestling, track and field, golf,
softball, baseball, dance, archery, speech, marching band, pep band,
jazz band, jazz choir, drama, robotics, and FFA.

When can I take college classes through Kirkwood?


Students typically take classes at Kirkwood during their Junior and
Senior years. Online classes can be taken or Academy classes at

Kirkwood. If you attend Kirkwood Academy you will take classes at


Central City in the morning and at Kirkwood in the afternoon.

What are the lunch procedures?


We have two lunch groups: A lunch and B lunch. Your 5 th period teacher
will tell you which lunch you have, as well as when you are dismissed
for lunch. Seconds are allowed as long as you have a positive lunch balance. If you
owe more than $15.00 on your account, we will serve you a cheese sandwich, fruit, and milk
until your balance is no longer negative.

What are PD Days?


PD Days are Professional Development days for teachers. Students
do not have school and teachers are involved in various meetings and
activities. This is time for teachers to learn ways to improve teaching.

Can we leave for lunch?


No. We do not offer open campus for lunch.

What time does breakfast start?


Breakfast is from 7:30-7:55 every morning. All food must be consumed
in the cafeteria.

What do I do if the vending machine eats my money?


If the vending machine takes your money, let the Food Service Director
(Denise Starry) know.

Hows the food?


Mandarin Orange Chicken day is everyones favorite, especially Mr.
Carlson. There is good variety available. Students in grades 5-12 have
the option of regular lunch, salad, or a sub sandwich for lunch. All
salads and sub sandwiches must be pre-ordered by 8:30 AM on the
serving day.
