Weekly Log 8

This weekly log summarizes Chelsea Coop's first full week of student teaching. She taught reading, writing, math, social studies and reading groups. One satisfying experience was making lessons her own by engaging activities like having students make compass roses. A challenge was student blurting, but implementing a tally system to reward hand raising improved behavior. For the upcoming week, observation would be allowed anytime besides recess or specials, as she continues map and math units and a pumpkin seed counting activity.

Student Teaching Weekly Log
1. How did you spend your time this week? What responsibilities did you have?
This week was my first full week of bell to bell teaching. I was responsible for teaching
reading, writing, math and social studies as well as reading groups. I have taken full
responsibility as a teacher this week and will continue to do so for the next three weeks.
Everything went well and I am excited to be teaching my second week.
2. What were the most satisfying experiences? Greatest challenges?
One of the most satisfying experiences this week was simply taking the lessons and
making them my own. It was fun being able to take the lessons and planning them a way
that I thought would be more engaging and fun for the students. For example, I taught a
lesson about compass roses and had students make their own compass rose and they were
able to test it by finding the direction (N, S, E, W) in the classroom. The students loved
it and enjoyed being able to make their own compass rose. A challenge this week has
been with students and their blurting. I wanted to think of a behavioral plan/goal to help
students remember to raise their hand when they have something to say. I made five
tallies on the board and told students that to help us remember to raise our hand, each
time we blurt, we lose a tally. If they keep all tallies they receive two extra tickets to put
into the jar and if they lose tallies they only get one. If the students lose all the tallies they
do not receive any extra tickets. Implementing this behavior strategy has improved
greatly already with the students and their talking
3. What are your plans for the upcoming week? Best times to observe?
Since I am bell to bell for the next three weeks, any time would be fine to come in and
observe (besides when we have specials and recess). I am continuing to teach a unit on
maps, giving a unit exam in math, and doing a fun pumpkin activity for math where
students count pumpkin seeds (Monday during social studies/science time).
