Stainless Steel Cutting Speeds & Feeds

This document provides recommended cutting speeds and feeds for various common machining operations like drilling, turning, and milling using high speed steel tooling. It includes tables with speed and feed guidelines for drilling, turning, and milling various materials like aluminum, brass, cast iron, mild steel, stainless steel, and plastics. It also provides notes on interpolating speeds for intermediate drill sizes, adjusting speeds and feeds for roughing versus finishing cuts, and recommended depths of cut for different milling operations.

Cutting speeds can be increased 3 - 6 times for carbide trpped tooling.

When taking a finishing cut the speed can be increased and feed slowed down. For the purposes of this exercise
we will assume the same feed and speed for roughing and finishing.

Decrease speeds by 40o/o for'side and face'milling or'end millingislot milling' and 60Yo for form milling.
Recommended depths of cut for end milling/slot milling are a maximum of half the cutter diameter for
roughing (usually for aluminium so proportion down for other materials) and [Link] - 0.5mm for finishing.
For face milling, as a rough guide, half the tooth depth.
