III. JOB : Fits, assembles, erects, installs, maintains and repairs


DESCRIPTION mechanical plants and equipment, including emergency
generators.

IV. TRADE SKILLS : Ability to:

1. Correctly use and maintain the tools of the trade


including power tools, test equipment and
measuring instruments.

2. Undertake marking out and bench fitting to


specified tolerances.

3. Use and maintain relevant measuring instruments


and standards.

4. Carry out simple sheet metal work and pipe work.

5. Perform electric and gas welding, hard soldering and


brazing.

6. Install, maintain and repair mechanical plants and


equipment.

7. Read and interpret engineering drawings and


specifications.

8. Install, maintain and repair emergency generators


for buildings.

9. Use safety equipment, and protective devices and


equipment.

10. Correctly instruct, supervise and transfer skills to


any apprentice and semi-skilled worker assigned to
him to ensure safety and quality of work.

V. TRADE THEORY : Knowledge of:

1. Workshop technology covering welding, fabrication


processes, machine and hand tools, measuring
instruments, properties and heat treatment of
materials.

2. Basic engineering science and simple calculations.

3. Operating and maintenance principles of mechanical


plant and machinery.

4. Engineering drawing.

5. Basic electrical technology, and principles of


hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

6. Operating principles and structure of emergency


generators for buildings.

7. Industrial hazards, safety and health precautions,


energy saving and environmental concerns.

8. Installation practice and regulations, and relevant


codes of practice.

9. Relevant ordinances and regulations.

VI. ENTRY ROUTE : Preferred Minimum Entry Qualification:

Completion of Secondary 3.

Training:

4-year organized apprenticeship or 3-year organized


apprenticeship if preceded by a relevant one-year full-time
basic craft course, with attendance at a relevant part-time
day-release or block-release craft course in an institute of
vocational education or equivalent.
