Barnes, Tom. "These Charts Show How Drastically Pop Has Changed Over the Past 50
Years." Mic. Mic Network Inc., 10 June 2016. Web. 07 Feb. 2017.
This article really goes into how the pop music world has changed over the past
50 years or so. It compares each decade to one another but also contracts the essay as
well. They break it down into many subcategories that differentiate from one another in
some form. They even compare certain things such as the word choice used over the
decades, song styles, etc. They really break it down into numerous types of tables to
really show you exactly how it can be comparable and contrast each other. The difference
in musicians really could be the ultimate source of all the difference comparisons.
While the article does go into pop music as a whole, the data it contracted could
also be highly inaccurate. Explaining the different words choices on a song is a factor of
change, yes, however it does not really explain how the music element itself changed as a
whole. Explaining how the different artists of each time had different word choices for a
song isnt enough to exclude an actual change. The way music has been written.
produced, and thought out out within the past fifty years and composing that all into one
article would have been a better approach to really grasp the idea of ultimate change in
the music industry. Otherwise diving into the different genres of music would have also
been a good resolution.

Decimals. Billboard, 08 Jan. 2017. Web. 07 Feb. 2017.
This article also shares similar ways of collecting its information. They closely
record and collect data and use selected statistics to express their information out there.
They use all sorts of interactive graphs to distinctly display their data and show exactly
how things differentiate from one another. They even break it down further as to show
the different characteristics in a song that presume the loudness or the different
movements in sound. Which all relates back to the time they were released and the
quality of the sound itself. By using all these types of statistics, they really get technical
with how each individual song is displayed and how it correlates to the data.
He really dove into a deeper understanding of the change in music within the past
couple of decades. Such measures as measuring several elements linking to production
and then comparing that with the different time periods. However the way music has
changed isnt always based on technical information. The legacy of impact left by certain
musicians also plays factor into the different swifts of change in the music industry. How
artists influenced other artists through their sound which could have been briefly touched
on while talking about the different elements in musical production. The article which
relates to the Billboard Music Charts, also doesnt mean you have to necessarily rely on
those to determine change though.
Frere-Jones, Sasha. "On Top." The New Yorker. The New Yorker, 26 Mar. 2006. Web. 07
Feb. 2017.
This article particularly talks about the powerhouse vocalist, and international
super-star, Mariah Carey and her impact on music overall. This article expresses all of
her different hit songs and albums and shows how she has influenced other artists such as
Beyonce. They also dive into the different vocal technique she uses after discussing her
vocal abilities as an artist. Mariah is known to have one of the biggest vocal ranges that
the world has even seen, reaching notes that are superhuman like per say. They also
compare and contrast her to other huge names in music such as the popular international
band, U2 and other major artists that released music around the time she has.
While she talks about the musical legend, Mariah Carey as a whole, she doesnt
talk much about how she impacted the music industry as much. She mentioned that she
inspired the musical artist Beyonce but that was all she mentioned on who she's impacted.
It is commonly known that Mariah inspired numerous if not all of the female music
artists that debuted after she has. She could have inspired male artists aswell, its whoever
personally claimed her as a musical inspiration for them. They grasp on the idea that she
pioneered melisma and that Whitney popularized it but she also started other trends that
could also be noted. Another popular one for instance, is the trend of having a rapper as a
feature on a popular R&B or pop song, which is still very common to this very day.

Katz, Mark. Capturing Sound: How Technology Has Changed Music. Charlotte: U of
North Carolina at Charlotte, 2004. Print.
The book goes really deep in all the changes of music that relate to technology.
Starting from the early 1900s when technology was barely around and brand new to
today where there are millions of devices that are used to create music. It grasps an
industrial timeline of the different mechanics and tools used to create music and how they
updated throughout the years. It even dives further into other aspects of music which are
very common today rather than back a couple decades ago, which is music sampling.
This book really grasps a crisp clear resolution of how technology really impacted the
music scene.
While they grasp the idea of how early technology changed music, they dont go
into how modern technology changed music. The only topic that they discussed that is a
modern form of production in music is music sampling from old songs. They didnt seem
to describe how all the modern elements of production go into current music. Even
though the book was written in 2004, there was still many new technological tools that
went into creating music during the early 2000s time period. Recording in a studio and
having all those different buttons and machinery to go into one song wasnt really
introduced into the music industry until the 70s or 80s so they failed to pick up on how
that was a common factor into the technological change of music.
Knowles-Carter, Beyonce Giselle. "LEMONADE." [Link]. Parkwood
Entertainment, 22 Apr. 2016. Web. 07 Feb. 2017.
The LEMONADE album by Beyonce Giselle Knowles-Carter was released on
April 23rd 2016 by Parkwood Entertainment. This is her 6th consecutive studio album,
and the 3rd to be released this decade. The song features two major artists such as Abel
Tesfaye who goes by the stage name The Weeknd, and Kendrick Lamar. The song also
features two minor artists, Jack White and James Blake. This album is known to be one
of the most impactful albums in recent U.S. history due to its obvious political and
domestic message about a different variance amongst topics that spread from cheating
affairs to police brutality.
Lemonade touched on several political and controversial issues, which was the
cause of its commercial impact, especially within the United States. Beyonce is known to
have changed the music industry, which often is overlook and underappreciated today.
She did it first with the release of her Self-Titled album back in 2013, and then again
changed its retrospective within the music industry with the release of this universally
acclaimed album. Needless to say, Beyonces huge platform is often seen to change the
music industry quite often and its shown by how certain artists try to follow the same
techniques and patterns that she first pioneered onto music.
