Sustained Silent Reading
(SSR)
What is SSR?
Students will use Sustained Silent Reading time to read books of their choice within the
traditional classroom session. For approximately 20 minutes each week (and sometimes twice a
week), students will be able to read a book that they want to read as opposed to the text that is
assigned from the curriculum.
Why is SSR important and valuable?
SSR allows students an opportunity to build their vocabulary, prior knowledge, and
background.
Research has shown that SSR can actually help students prepare for standardized tests.
SSR fosters an appreciation for reading and hopefully creates and supports life-long
readers.
What are the rules and regulations for SSR?
During the allotted time, students should be reading their chosen book. Students should
not be working on homework or reading the assigned text from class.
Students may not read textbooks, magazines, newspapers, etc.
Students should take care of their books and return books upon completion.
Students should be respectful of their peers and allow other students to read in a quiet
environment.
Students may be asked to talk about what they are reading or write a short review of what
they are reading. These assignments will count towards their participation grade.
Students may submit a one-pager each term to receive extra credit.
What books can be read during SSR?
Students will choose their own books for SSR from Mr. Moshkovitzs classroom library,
the AHS library, any other public library, or from their own personal collections.
Disclaimer for parents
Any books deemed inappropriate by parents can be substituted. Parents are encouraged to be part
of the conversation about books and should be aware of what their children are reading.
I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading!
How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! When I have a house of my own,
I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.
Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice
