UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:
The Google lesson plan is part of a unit covering Geography that enables the students to see, understand and
appreciate the web of relationships between people, places, and environments. Students will use the knowledge,
skills, and understanding of concepts within the six essential elements of geography: world in spatial terms, places
and regions, physical systems, human systems, environment and society, and the uses of geography as described
in the TN state social studies standard 3.0.
LESSON OBJECTIVE:

1. Given the title of the historical landmarks, students will be able identify why the landmarks are historical to the
United states with a score of three out of four on the rubric. (Blooms taxonomy: comprehension)
2. Given the selected images, students will place the images where they belong on the United States map with a
score of three out of four on the rubric. (Blooms taxonomy: knowledge, comprehension, analysis)
3. Given a computer and Google earth software, working together in a group students will be able to put together a
virtual tour of historical landmarks thought out a given state in the United States with a score of three out of four
on the rubric. (Blooms taxonomy: synthesis)
4. Work together and present the information to their pierce with a score of three out of four on the rubric.
Student Participation
The goal of this lesson is for students to demonstrate a clear understanding of historical landmarks and why they are
important. Students will write reflections of each historical landmark and create a visual representation of the given
landmarks using Google Earth.

Google, to search for images of the landmarks, as well as other outside sources then the
one provided.

Students will use the websites stated above as resources to help complete the worksheet of Historical Landmarks. The
Google Earth software will be used to create a virtual tour of their given landmarks. Students, upon completing the
activity, will save and submit a copy of their group work to a thumb drive the teacher will provide, as well as present
the tour to the class.
BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of each historical landmark by providing a virtual
tour of the places as well as completing a historical landmark worksheet.
Academic Language is not addressed in IDT 3600.
This lesson is a continuation of TN social studies standard 3.0.
We will refer to the virtual tours created here as we continue to explore the different historical
landmarks around the world.
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
Introduction:
Begging by splitting the class into groups and giving each group 5 different Historical landmark
Provide brief background of what makes landmarks historical.
Follow with a brief discussion of a few historical landmarks.
Take them on a virtual tour of a few historical landmarks around New York cities.
Procedures:
Prior to the Computer (30 Minutes)
(first day)
Teacher procedures:
After the introduction, distribute the list of the 3 historical landmarks to each group and briefly discuss
with each group which state the landmarks is in.
Give a demonstration of how to navigate Google Earth and the proper websites above.
Student procedures:
Students will pair up in their groups of 5 and pick a computer.
They will then discuss in their groups (before the teachers gets to them) which state they think the
landmarks are in.
(second day- fourth day) (10 minutes)
Teacher procedures:
Briefly discuss how far each group got and make sure that each student is understand the assignment
properly.
Student procedures:
Get with their group around computer and briefly reflect on the landmark they did prior to the day.
(fifth day) (3 minutes)
Teacher procedures:
Set up projector and place thumb drive in the computer.
Have a student Pass out worksheet on the landmarks they will be learning about.
Student procedures:
Gather in their groups

Walk around to each group and make sure they are navigating the software correctly.
Answer any questions the groups may have.
Student procedures:
Pull up Google Earth and explore the software and become familiar with it how to use it.

Work together to use the websites above to gather information and create the virtual tour of each
landmark.
(fourth day) (45 minutes)
Teacher procedures:
Walk around to each group and make sure they are navigating the software correctly.

Walk to each group with the thumb drive and save the finished project.

MODIFICATIONS:
For groups that are not mastering the assessment will work together with someone/ group who does
understand the concept and excels or the load of landmarks will be lowered.
For groups that are excelling they will be given more landmarks to add to their presentation.
Also for a student that is struggling to fill out the worksheet they can be given a word bank.

A student sample will be dropped in the dropbox of the Google Earth virtual tour. In order to open it you must use
a computer that has Google Earth software.
