U.N. Energy Summit: Country Energy Analysis

This document provides instructions for a three-step research project on a country's primary energy sources. In step one, students research their country's main energy source, annual energy needs, how the source works, and environmental impacts. Step two requires outlining the pros and cons of the country's main power source. In step three, students will attend a mock UN conference to debate energy and climate agreements with other countries based on their research. The document includes rubrics to evaluate student performance in each step.

Step 1 - Research
1. What type of energy source does your country primarily uses, or planning to use, to
produce electrical energy? (Hydroelectric, Coal, Oil, Natural Gas, Geothermal, Nuclear,
Wind, Solar, etc.)
2. How much energy does your country currently requires annually (in kgoe/year)?
3. How does your energy source work?
What fuel does it use?
Where does that fuel come from?
How does your energy source convert the fuel to electrical energy?
4. What is the environmental impact of your countrys main source of energy (If your
country is currently changing to a greener energy source you may also research that).
Possible environmental effects
Habitat destruction
Hazardous waste
Air/Water/Soil pollution
Etc.
5. What (if anything) is being done to minimize environmental impact? Are there any
reclamation efforts?

Step 2 - Weigh the Pros and Cons of your countrys main power
source.
5. Outline the pros and cons of using your countrys primary power source.
Possible pros and cons
Pros Cons
Cost Environmental impact (could be more
Availability than one here)
Job creation International pressure (trade tariffs)
Economic situation (India vs. Canada) Domestic Taxes (carbon tax)

6. Do you think your country should keep its primary energy

source what it is? Or do you think your country should
make some changes? What are your reasons?
Please answer in paragraph form.
Step 3 - Conference
7. You will attend the U.N Energy and Climate Summit to represent your country. As your
countrys energy and environmental representative, you will debate the demands and
agreements you would like to form with other countries in regards to climate change.
8. In your debate, use what you have learned about carbon emissions, fuel availability,
environmental damage, etc., to help guide your demand and agreements.
