Pet Therapy's Impact on Nursing Students

This study examines the effectiveness of pet therapy in reducing stress levels among 4th year nursing students at Arellano University. Nursing students experience high stress due to managing their time between school, family, social life and clinical duties. Prolonged stress can negatively impact students' health and academic performance. The study aims to determine the perceived level of effectiveness of pet therapy, identify common stressors among 4th year students, and assess if a relationship exists between pet therapy and reduced stress levels. The researchers hope to help counselors recommend pet therapy as a stress relief technique and help students improve coping skills through this alternative therapy.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

College is a stressful time for students especially 4th nursing students. They need to manage

their time between families, social, academics and RLE. Oftentimes, they spend ample amount of

time on their academics because they need to be at school for seven days. As a fourth year student,

they have a subject Course Audit which reviews the topics from level I to level IV. The hardship

of having a great amount of school works and a seven days schedule leaves the students a little

time to rest and a high level of stress.

This stress can be compounded as college students are vulnerable to stress carryover, a

condition where stress experienced in one area of their life, whether at home, in a class, at work,

or with a roommate, can increase the stress in other areas (Pederson, 2012). The stress of college

students has major implications on learning and performance.

Stress has a detrimental effect not only on the physio-psycho-social health of an individual

but as well-being as a whole. In addition, stress could trigger alcoholism, eating disorder, sleep

disorder, absenteeism and psychological disorder. It will not only affect their school performance

but other aspects of life as well. This study is about exploring the effectiveness of pet therapy in

helping the 4th year nursing students relieve or reduce their stress level.
Statement of the Problem

The main purpose of the study is to identify the effectiveness of pet therapy on stress levels

among 4th year nursing students at Arellano University.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the level of effectiveness of pet therapy as perceived by the respondents?

2. What are the different stressors encountered by 4th year nursing students at Arellano

University with regards to their academic and clinical duties?

3. Is there any significance relationship between pet therapy and stress level of 4th year

nursing students?

Significance of the Study

This study on effectiveness of pet therapy on stress will be able to help the school

counsellors and students. School counsellors usually helps out the students to manage

their problems and voice out their stressors. They will be able to recommend pet

therapy to relieve or reduce their stress. In addition, if students are aware about pet

therapy they will be able to try it and improve their coping skills on stress.

Common questions

Pet therapy aids in emotional and psychological adjustment by mitigating stress and anxiety, creating a more balanced and positive outlook. It provides emotional support and stability amid the transitional phase of completing education and entering professional practice, thus enhancing students' psychological resilience during their final year .

Pet therapy serves as a complementary approach within integrative health strategies, offering a non-pharmacological option that can be used alongside other therapies such as meditation, counseling, and physical exercise. Its role is to provide holistic support that addresses emotional and psychological needs through natural, human-animal interactions .

Assessment should consider individual differences in stress responses, prior exposure to pets, personal beliefs about pet therapy, and the specific contexts in which therapy is applied. These factors can influence how students perceive and report the effectiveness of pet therapy as a stress reduction tool .

The study suggests that counselors could incorporate pet therapy into their strategies to offer students an innovative and effective means of stress relief. By recommending pet therapy, counselors can provide a practical tool that complements traditional counseling methods, thus enhancing their ability to support students in managing stress .

Pet therapy may alleviate stress by providing emotional support and companionship, fostering a sense of relaxation and comfort for the students. It can lead to a reduction in cortisol levels, which are associated with stress, thereby improving emotional well-being. Such therapy offers a break from the rigorous academic and clinical demands faced by nursing students, thereby enhancing their ability to manage stress and potentially improving learning and performance outcomes .

The stressors include academic workload, clinical duties, and personal life demands. These stressors can exacerbate stress levels, making students more susceptible to stress-related health issues. Pet therapy can be effective in managing these stressors by providing comfort and reducing anxiety, thus helping students better handle the pressure from these multiple demands .

Stress carryover implies that stress in one area, like academic pressures, can amplify stress in other areas of life, such as personal relationships. Pet therapy may counteract stress carryover by offering a calming presence that helps students disconnect from stressful stimuli across various domains, promoting overall stress reduction and emotional balance .

The research aims to establish a significant relationship by evaluating students’ perceptions and measuring stress level changes pre- and post-pet therapy intervention. It seeks to confirm that pet therapy leads to observable reductions in stress indicators, underscoring its efficacy as a therapeutic tool for stress management among 4th-year nursing students .

Awareness of pet therapy can lead to its increased use, providing students with an accessible means to manage stress. By integrating pet therapy into their coping strategies, students may experience improved emotional regulation and resilience, positively impacting their academic and personal lives. This enhances their ability to effectively handle stressors and maintain well-being .

Stress can lead to issues such as anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and social withdrawal, adversely affecting students' physio-psycho-social health. Pet therapy addresses these issues by promoting relaxation, enhancing mood, and facilitating social interaction, thereby improving both mental and physical health outcomes for nursing students .
