Oyster Mushroom Yield Study in Iloilo

This document discusses a study conducted to determine the yield performance of oyster mushrooms grown using different substrates. Specifically, the study aimed to compare the yield of oyster mushrooms in terms of colonization period, cap diameter, and number of mushrooms per cluster when grown on sawdust, rice bran, newspaper, and corncobs. The results of this study could help mushroom farmers identify optimal substrates for production and potentially improve farm profits and the local economy.

A. INTRODUCTION

An Oyster mushroom is an edible mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) that

grows especially on deciduous trees and deadwood (Merriam-Webster,

2017). Oyster mushroom has been widely cultivated in many different parts of

the world. It has ability to grow at a wide range of temperatures utilizing various

lignocelluloses (Snchez, 2010) . The demand for Oyster mushrooms have

been dramatically increased because of its anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial effects.

People who grew Oyster mushroom earn big profits.

Oyster mushroom cultivation can play an important role in managing organic

wastes whose disposal has become a problem (Das and Mukherjee, 2007).

Oyster mushroom can be cultivated in any type of ligno cellulose material like

straw, sawdust, rice hull, etc. Hami (1990) studied the oyster mushroom

cultivation on sawdust of different woods and found that [Link] gave the

maximum yield. Presently sawdust is commonly used and is the preferred

medium at commercial sale.

The main objective of this study was to determine the yield performance of

Oyster mushrooms using different substrates. To be more precise, this study

aimed to determine the significant difference in the yield performance of Oyster

mushrooms and the yield of Oyster mushrooms in terms of total colonization

period, diameter of the cap, and the number of mushrooms grown in one cluster

using different substrates. The study also aims to compare the performance of

the currently accepted substrate for mushroom growing which is sawdust and

rice bran to other substrates such as newspaper, corncobs and sawdust. Based

on the amount of each different substrates used, the substrates may affect the

yield performance of Oyster mushrooms. This study deemed beneficial to the

following: farmers who would like to pursue mushroom production; if successful

this will eventually improve the economy of the families and of the community.
