LANGUAGE LAB: AN EFFECTIVE AID IN BUILDING
COMMUNICATION SKILL
Language is the power to acquire and use systems of communication.
It can also be referred to as the method of human communication,
either written or spoken through the use of words in a structured or
conventional way. Speaking and writing effectively is probably more
important today than ever before. Yet while the importance of
communication skills increases, many people find it difficult to set
about acquiring them. It can be administered as a major drawback for
students in their communication skills. Communication Skills include
listening, speaking, manners of communication such as body
language, clarity, eye contact, hand gestures etc. It also administers
the essentials of language: Grammar, Spelling, Punctuation and
Pronunciation. These subjects which many people find somewhat
intimidating are presented in a clear, accessible and user-friendly
style. For this purpose, the concept of Language Labs has been
introduced in various schools, colleges, and universities.
The language laboratory is an audio or audio-visual installation used
as an aid in modern language teaching. Students can record and assess
their performance to make sure that they are paying attention to all
aspects of phonetics such as pronunciation, accents, and stress etc. A
language lab encourages the participation and integration of students
in different exercises. It allows them to have access to the information
quickly and easily, personalizing the learning process, encouraging
1
creativity and innovation. It also enhances skill development and
collaborative work.
The significance of Language Labs can be illustrated as follows:
It contains guided exercises that help students improve their speaking
and listening abilities, resolve confusions arising from formal and
informal conversations and many.
In our own Language Lab classes, we learned about conversation
skills in order to acquaint with the processes of starting and ending it
with the use of salutations. We also learned to rectify some common
errors that we make on a day to day basis.
A way to learn a new concept is to connect it with what we already
know. Our Language Lab helped us to build thinking skills and to
acquaint us with the concepts of analogies.
Lessons on Phrases and Idioms provided us with the incentive to
understand the beauty of some words that have a characteristic mode
of expression. Those words generated an impulse to think out of the
box and provided a pristine way to communicate effectively.
The lessons on Antonyms and Synonyms made it easy for us to
expand our knowledge in the fields of vocabulary.
A language lab can also serve as a communicative class under the
guidance of a teacher. Various sessions of extempore speeches and
group discussions helped us to boost our confidence in speaking and
administer qualities of authenticity and presence of mind to a large
2
extent. It also helped us to cope with rational fears of public speaking
or stage fright.
Language Labs thus play an effective role in practicing and building
communication skills. It is rendered to be a necessity nowadays
because we must be thoroughly acquainted with the means to express
knowledge. Hence, Language Labs can be called as an effective aid in
building communication skill, pertaining to the various needs of the
clear administration of a particular language.
