EXPERIMENT 5:
CONTROL VALVE CHARACTERISTICS
5.1 OBJECTIVE OF THE EXPERIMENT
(i) To determine the characteristic curve of a linear control valve
(ii) To determine the characteristic curve of an equal percentage control valve
(iii) To characteristic curve of a quick opening control valve
5.2 INTRODUCTION
Experimental stand for control valve is designed to introduce students to typical control valve
characteristics. The tank, pump instrumentation and valves are strategically located for easy
access. For safety reason, the control panel shall be protected against water splashes. The
process piping shall be made of industrial pipes.

ACTION REMARKS
TEP
Check and make sure hand valves position as follows.
Close HV521, HV526, HV527, HV528, HV529,
HV531, HV534, HV535, HV536, HV537
1 Open HV522, HV524, HV525, HV530, HV 532,
HV533
Start pump P-510 and let the water circulate.
Use the potentiometer at the front panel to inject a control
2 signal. Adjust HV530 and HV523 so that PDT510 reads 1
psig. Record the stroke percentage and the flow rate.
What is the suitable stroke percentage that you should use
to perform the opening of the valve. Ensure the differential
pressure PDT510 kept constant.
