Cessna 172 Traffic Pattern: Crosswind

This document provides tips for flying the traffic pattern in a Cessna 172 aircraft when there are crosswinds. It outlines the key steps for each phase of flight, including crosswind takeoff and landing, the upwind leg, downwind leg, base leg, final approach, and landing. Pilots are advised to aviate, then communicate, scan for traffic at all times, and follow standard traffic pattern procedures of maintaining the appropriate airspeeds, altitudes, and aircraft configuration for each leg of the pattern.

Cessna 172 Traffic

Pattern Tips:
CROSSWIND ~ Aviate then Communicate
Crosswind: ~ Scan for traffic at all times
~ Turn X-wind 500 ft ~ Region of reverse command:
AGL or for noise Pitch for airspeed, power for altitude
~ Wings level U ~ No more than 30° bank in pattern
~ Keep climbing VY (75) P ~ Always know where runway is at
~ Immediate wing dip for W ~ Maintain ground track (crab angle
traffic, right turn to I as necessary for wind)
downwind N ~ Maintain spacing
D ~ If extending downwind for traffic,
do not turn base until traffic on final
passes wing opposite direction
~ Anticipate turns

Downwind:
~ Parallel to runway D
no more than 1 mile O
from runway W
~ Level at 1000 AGL N
pitch, power, trim W
~ power 2100 RPM I
N
D

Final:
~ Turn in line with
runway
*Downwind Abeam: ~ When runway is
~ report “### right F made add 3rd notch of
downwind” I flaps (30°)
~ Carb heat on N ~ Pitch for 65 knots
~ Power 1700 RPM A ~ Follow glide slope
~ Slow airspeed to white arc L ~ Pitch for airspeed,
by gently raising nose power for altitude!!!
~ White arc, 1st notch of
flaps (10°Ö
)
~ Pitch for 75 knots
~ Begin descent, lose about
200ft
~ do not begin descent if BASE Base:
asked to extend downwind, ~ Turn base at 45°ßangle
add power to maintain from landing point
altitude ~ Roll out from turn and add
2nd notch of flaps (20°Ô
)
~ Pitch for 70 knots
~ Lose about another 200 ft
