Soil Mechanics: Sieve Analysis & Soil Classification

1. This document provides instructions for 6 soil mechanics assignments involving: sieve analysis and grain size distribution of a soil sample; determining particle size from a hydrometer test; calculating moist and dry unit weights of a compacted soil; properties of a loose and compacted sand fill; constructing a liquid limit curve and determining plasticity index from liquid and plastic limit tests; and classifying 10 soil samples using the IS soil classification system. 2. Students are asked to analyze sieve test results to determine grain size distribution and coefficients, calculate particle settling size from a hydrometer test, compute unit weights at different compaction levels, and derive properties like plasticity index and classify soils based on test results. 3. The assignments

CE 331: Soil Mechanics

Assignment No. 1
Date: 8 Aug 2012 Due Date: 16 Aug 2012

1. Following are the results of a sieve analysis

a. Determine the percent finer than each sieve size and plot a grain-size distribution
curve.
b. Determine D10, D30 and D60 from the grain-size distribution curve.
c. Calculate the uniformity coefficient, Cu
d. Calculate the coefficient of gradation, Cz.

2. A hydrometer test has the following results: Gs = 2.7, temperature of water = 24 C and L =
9.2 cm at 60 minutes after the start of sedimentation. What is the diameter D of the smallest-
size particles that have settled beyond the zone of measurement at that time (that is, t = 60
min)?

3. For a given soil, emax = 0.75, emin = 0.46 and Gs = 2.68. What will be the moist unit weight
3
of compaction (kN/m ) in the field if Dr = 78% and w = 9%? Also determine the dry unit
weight of the compacted soil.

4. A loose, uncompacted sand fill 2m in depth as a relative density of 40%. Laboratory tests
indicated that the minimum and maximum void ratios of the sand are 0.46 and 0.90
respectively. The specific gravity of solids of the sand is 2.65.
a. What is dry unit weight of the sand?
b. If the sand is compacted to a relative density of 75%, what is the decrease in
thickness of the 2m fill?
5. The following are the results from liquid and plastic limit tests for a soil: liquid limit test
value are given in table below and plastic limit is 17.2%
a. Draw the flow curve and obtain the liquid limit.
b. What is the plasticity index of the soil?

20 40.8
28 39.1

6. The sieve analysis of 10 soils and the liquid and plastic limits of the fraction passing through
the No. 40 sieve are given in the following table. Classify the soil by the IS classification
system and give the group indices for each.
