This document provides calculations for development length of reinforcing bars in concrete columns for an indoor stadium project. It defines the development length as the bar diameter multiplied by the bar stress divided by the bond stress. It then calculates the required development lengths for bars in compression (Ldc) and tension (Ldt) using different bond stress values increased for deformed bars and bars in compression. Tables show the required development lengths calculated for different bar diameters and columns, and that the provided lengths are adequate.

TIRUPATI
TITLE : INDOOR STADIUM - CALCULATION FOR DEVELOPMENT DESIGNED CHECKED
LENGTH

DEVELOPMENT LENGTH = F ss / (4 tbd)

F = Nominal diameter of bar.

ss = Stress in the bar at the section considered at design load.
tbd = Design bond stress.
Design Bond stress for M20 Grade = 1.2 N/mm2 Refer IS-456.

For Deformed bars, the bond stress shall be increased by 60%.

For bars in compression, the bond stress shall be increased by 25%.

Hence, bond stress for deformed bars in compression = 1.6*1.25*1.2 = 2.4 N/mm2

Hence, bond stress for deformed bars in tension = 1.6*1.2*1.33 = 2.5536 N/mm2

ss = 0.87*sy = 361.05 N/mm2

Development length in compression (Ldc) = F * 361.05 / (4 * 2.4)

Ldc = 37.61 F

Development length in tension (Ldt)= F * 361.05 / (4 * 2.66)

Ldt = 35.35 F

TITLE : DESIGNED CHECKED

DEVELOPMENT LENGTH = F ss / (4 tbd)

F = Nominal diameter of bar.

ss = Stress in the bar at the section considered at design load.
tbd = Design bond stress.
Design Bond stress for M20 Grade = 1.7 N/mm2 Refer IS-456.

For Deformed bars, the bond stress shall be increased by 60%.

For bars in compression, the bond stress shall be increased by 25%.

Hence, bond stress for deformed bars in compression = 1.6*1.25*1.7 = 3.4 N/mm2

Hence, bond stress for deformed bars in tension = 1.6*1.7*1.33 = 3.6176 N/mm2

ss = 0.87*sy = 361.05 N/mm2

Development length in compression (Ldc) = F * 361.05 / 4 * 3.4

Ldc = 26.55 F

Development length in tension (Ldt)= F * 361.05 / 4 * 3.6176

Ldt = 24.95 F

Maximum Stress in Steel is considered for arriving at the development length.

However actual stresses will be much less.
