What is a Bottlenose Dolphin?
The common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is a mammal that is
currently endangered because of mean human beings and many other causes. It
lives in the ocean near tropical and temperate areas where it is found worldwide.
The ecosystem that the dolphin lives in is the ocean and it is found on coastal
areas around the globe.
What is the Bottlenose Dolphin's diet and what are
its enemies?
Bottlenose dolphins mostly eat fish and squid but occasionally they can eat
shrimps and other crustaceans. In some parts of the ocean it is the apex predator
but it plays a SUPER important role in the ecosystem by ensuring the reproduction
of fisheries resources. It is part of a commensalism relationship with us humans
by driving the fish towards us humans and the dolphin gets some to little food.
What does a Bottlenose Dolphin look like, how does
it reproduce, and what is it´s behavior?
A bottlenose dolphin is an animal with a streamlined body with a large fin on top. Their skin
is grey and smooth unlike most mammals (except a whale and other animals like it) which
usually has long hair. The bottlenose dolphin usually becomes sexually mature at the ages 5
to 12. Their average gestation period lasts for 12 months. They do not take care of the
offspring each other (the male and female obviously) because the male stays for a few days
and leaves to mate another female while the female keeps the offspring. The longest
longevity for a female was 57 years old ,while the male maximum was 48 years old. It’s
behavior is friendly except when frustrated or angry at something or someone.
Why are the Bottlenose Dolphins going
endangered?
They are being stuck in nets thrown by fishermen for capturing fish but they get
tangled into them and die. They are also being hunted either for commercial or
cultural reasons. That is why they are endangered.
What is being done to conserve the Bottlenose
Dolphin?
All marine mammals (including the bottlenose dolphin) within US territorial waters,
dolphins are legally protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act and several
other laws. Most other countries have similar protections in place, as well. It is
important because it allows us humans to have for fish by protecting and
nourishing fisheries resources. There are 600,000 common bottlenose dolphins
worldwide.
