CHERENKOV RADIATION
▸ It is an electromagnetic radiation emitted when a charged
particle (such as an electron) passes through a dielectric
medium at a speed greater than the phase velocity of light
in that medium.
▸ The characteristic blue glow of an underwater nuclear
reactor is due to Cherenkov radiation.
CHERENKOV ~ SONIC BOOM
▸ The Cherenkov radiation is analogous with the more well-
known sonic boom effect.
CHERENKOV ~ SONIC BOOM
▸ If an aircraft moves slower than the sound speed in a
medium, the air deflection is smooth around the wings of
the aircraft.
▸ However if the motion speed exceeds the medium sound
velocity, then a sudden pressure change would happen
and shock waves propagate away from the aircraft in a
cone at the speed of sound.
TEXT
▸ The velocity referred to in Einstein's theory is the velocity
of light in empty space or vacuum. In a medium, e.g. a
liquid or a transparent solid, the velocity of light is lower
than in vacuum and furthermore varies with the
wavelength.
▸ In such a medium, it is thus entirely possible for an ultra-
fast electron, emitted from a radioactive source, to move
with a velocity greater than that of light in the medium.
TEXT
▸ A particle moving faster than the speed of light in the
medium will produce a conical wave of light with its apex
at the source.
▸ By measuring the cone angle, we can determine the speed
of the particle.
▸ This is used technically to determine the speeds of
particles as one of the methods of determining their
energy in high-energy research.
USES
▸ Medical imaging of radioisotopes and external beam
radiotherapy.
▸ In particle physics, the Cherenkov radiation is used
frequently in particle identification detectors (PID).
