MengECE D512 Problem Set 2

This document provides the instructions and problems for Problem Set 2 on radio wave propagation and antenna systems. There are two main problems involving transmission lines with different parameters. Problem 1 involves a DC voltage source and examines the voltage over time and space on the transmission line. Problem 2 involves an AC voltage source and asks the student to draw voltage graphs over time and space and determine maximum and minimum voltage amplitudes. The student is to complete the problem set individually and submit solutions by the next class meeting.

Meng ECE D512: Radio Wave Propagation and Antenna Systems

Problem Set 2
Instructions:
1. The problem set is to be accomplished individually. Discussion with your classmates is encouraged.
Copying is absolutely not allowed. Present complete and orderly solutions on standard intermediate
pad paper. No need to rewrite the problems.
2. The solutions to the problem set should be submitted next meeting in class.
Problems:
1. Given the transmission line as shown

Eg - generator voltage, Zg - generator impedance

ZL - load impedance
l - length of the transmission line
(a) Let Eg=48Vdc, Zg=300Ω, ZL= 500Ω, l=100m, and the transmission line has Zo=300Ω, α=0.05Np/m.
The velocity of propagation is 3x108m/s.
a.1. If V(t,x) is the voltage at x at any time t, draw the graph of V(200ns,x) vs. x.
a.2. Draw the graph of V(500ns,x) vs. x.
a.3. Draw the graph of V(t,50m) vs. t for 0≤t≤600ns
a.4. Determine how long it will take for the line voltage to reach steady state after the switch is
closed.
a.5. Determine V(t,x) at steady state.
(b) Let Eg=12sin(20π(106)t)V, Zg=200Ω, ZL= 500Ω, l=100m, and the transmission line has Zo=300Ω,
α=0 Np/m. The velocity of propagation is 3x108m/s.
b.1. If V(t,x) is the voltage at x at any time t, draw the graph of V(200ns,x) vs. x.
b.2. Draw the graph of V(t,60m) for 0≤t≤300ns
b.3. Determine V(t,x) at steady state.
b.4. Determine the location nearest to the load whose voltage amplitude is highest. What is the value
of this highest voltage amplitude?
b.5. Determine the location nearest to the generator whose voltage amplitude is lowest. What is the
value of this lowest voltage amplitude?
