Biology Form 5 Chapter 1 Paper 3 Experiment - Tsa Per V

This experiment aims to study the relationship between the total surface area per volume ratio and the rate of diffusion. The manipulated variable is the total surface area per volume ratio by using potato cubes of different sizes (1 cm3, 8 cm3, 27 cm3 and 64 cm3). The potatoes are immersed in colored water and the rate of diffusion is calculated using the percentage change in colored area over time. It is hypothesized that the larger the total surface area per volume ratio (smaller cube size), the faster the rate of diffusion. The results will show the percentage of colored area and calculated rate of diffusion for each cube size.

BIOLOGY FORM 5 CHAPTER 1 PAPER 3 EXPERIMENT: TSA/V

Aim/ To study the relationship between total surface area per volume ratio and √ E1
:
Objective the rate of diffusion. PI 1
What is the relationship between total surface area per volume ratio and the √ E1
Problem :
rate of diffusion? PI 2
The larger the total surface area per volume ratio / the smaller the size of √ E1
Hypothesis :
cube, the faster the rate of diffusion. PI 3
Variables
Manipulated : Total surface area per volume ratio / the size of cubes.
√ E1
Responding : Rate of diffusion.
PI 4
Fixed : Colored water temperature / time taken.
Material : Potato, Colored water.
√ E1
Apparatus : Penknife, white tiles, beaker, forceps, basin and gridded transparency.
PI 5
Calculate the rate of diffusion by using a formula.
√ E1
Technique : Rate of diffusion = Percentage of colored area (%min-1)
PI 6
Time taken
Procedure :  Potato tissues are cut into 1 cm3, 8 cm3, 27 cm3 and 64 cm3 cubes.
 Then the cubes are immersed into a basin containing 100ml of
colored water.
 All the cubes are left for 20 minutes.
 After 20 minutes, the outer surface of the cubes are dried with filter √ E1
paper and cut into two halves. PI 7
 The percentage of colored area in each cube is estimated by using a
girded transparency.
 The rate of diffusion of each cube is calculated.
 The results are recorded in the table.

Result: Size of cubes / cm3 Percentage of colored area / % Rate of diffusion / %min-1
