Chemical Engineering Quiz Prep

1. To make 1 lb of strawberry jam, 2.25 lbs of strawberries are needed. 2. The required flow rates of feed mixtures from Tank A and Tank B are 40 kmol/h and 60 kmol/h, respectively. 3. The paint retailer should sell the 17.0% pigment blend for $12.90/kg to yield a 10% profit.

QUIZ 2
INSTRUCTIONS: Solve the following problems and provide a detailed solution. Box your final answer. NOTE: Follow the
format for your assignment, no need to write the problems.

1. Strawberries contain about 15 wt% and 85 wt% water. To make a strawberry jam, crushed strawberries and sugar
are mixed in the a 45:55 ratio, and the mixture is heated to evaporate the water until the residue contains one-third
water by mass. Calculate how many pounds of strawberries are needed to make a pound of jam.

2. Gas streams containing hydrogen and nitrogen in different proportions are produced on request by blending the gases
from two feed tanks: Tank A (hydrogen mole fraction = X A) and Tank B (hydrogen mole fraction = XB). The requests
specify the desired hydrogen mole fraction, XP, and mass flow rate of the product stream, mP(kg/h). Suppose the feed
tank compositions are XA = 0.10 mol H2/mol and XB = 0.50 mol H2/mol, and the desired blend – stream mole fraction
and mass flow rate are XP = 0.20 and mP = 100 kg/h. Calculate the required flow rates of the feed mixtures (kmol/h).

3. A paint mixture containing 25.0% of a pigment and the balance water sells for $ 18.00/kg, and a mixture containing
12.0 % pigment sells for $10.00/kg. If a paint retailer produces a blend containing 17.0% pigment, for how much
($/kg) should it be sold to yield 10% profit. (HINT: Knowledge in Algebra is applied here.)

4. Wet sugar that contains one-fifth water by mass is conveyed through an evaporator in which 85.0% of the entering
water is vaporized. Taking a basis of 100 kg feed, calculate the following:
a) XW, the mass fraction of water in the wet sugar leaving the evaporator, and the ratio (kg water vaporize/kg
wet sugar leaving the evaporator)
b) If 1000 tons/day of wet sugar is fed to the evaporator, how much additional water must be removed from the
outlet sugar to dry it completely, and what annual revenue can be expected if dry sugar sells for $0.15/lb m.

5. One thousand kilograms per hour of mixture containing equal parts by mass of methanol and water is distilled. Product
streams leave the top and the bottom of the distillation column. The flow rate of the bottom stream is measured and
found to 673 kg/h, and the overhead stream is analyzed and found to contain 96.0 wt% methanol. Calculate the mass
and mole fractions of methanol and the molar flow rates of methanol and water in the bottom product stream.
