History and Stars of Ice Skating

Ice skating involves wearing ice skates to glide across ice. It began over 4,000 years ago in Finland as a way to travel across ice more efficiently. True skating emerged when blades with sharpened edges were added to cut into the ice. Modern skates have stayed similar since the 13th century when the Dutch invented adding edges. Ice skating is practiced for various reasons like exercise, sport, and leisure both indoors and outdoors on frozen bodies of water or ice rinks.

Ice skating(Figure skating) is the act of motion by
wearer of the ice skates to propel the participant
across a sheet of ice. This can be done for a variety
of reasons, including exercise, leisure, travelling,
and various sports. Ice skating occurs both on
specially prepared ice surfaces (arenas, tracks,
parks), both indoors and outdoors, as well as on
naturally occurring bodies of frozen water, such as
ponds, lakes and rivers.
Early history of ice skating
Research suggests that the earliest ice skating happened in
southern Finland more than 4,000 years ago. This was done to
save energy during winter journeys.[1] Originally, skates were
merely sharpened, flattened bone strapped to the bottom of the
foot. Skaters did not actually skate on the ice, but rather glided
on top of it.[2]
True skating emerged when a steel blade with sharpened
edges was used. Skates now cut into the ice instead of gliding
on top of it. Adding edges to ice skates was invented by
the Dutch in the 13th or 14th century. These ice skates were
made of steel, with sharpened edges on the bottom to aid
movement.
The construction of modern ice skates has stayed largely the
same since then. In the Netherlands, ice skating was
considered proper for all classes of people, as shown in many
pictures by the Old Masters.
Ice skating was also practiced in China during the Song
dynasty, and became popular among the ruling family of
the Qing dynasty.
Yuzuru Hanyu (羽生結弦 Hanyū Yuzuru, born
December 7, 1994) is a Japanese figure skater who competes in the
men's singles discipline. He is a two-time Olympic champion (2014,
2018), a two-time World champion (2014, 2017), a four-time Grand Prix
Finalchampion (2013–2016), a three-time Four Continents silver
medalist (2011, 2013, 2017), the 2010 World Junior champion,
the 2009–10 Junior Grand Prix Final champion, and a four-
time Japanese national champion (2012–2015). He has also medaled at
three other World Championships, taking bronze in 2012, and silver
in 2015 and 2016.
Regarded as one of, if not the greatest figure skater in history, Hanyu
has broken world records twelve times, and currently holds the world
records for the highest short program, free skating, and combined total
scores. He is the first man to have broken the 100-point barrier in the
men's short program, the 200-point barrier in the men's free skating, and
the 300-point barrier in the combined total score.
Hanyu is the first Asian figure skater competing in men's singles to win
the Olympic gold. At the age of nineteen, he was the youngest male
skater to win the Olympic title since Dick Button in 1948. He also
became the first man to win two consecutive Olympic gold medals
since Dick Button's back-to-back titles in 1948 and 1952. At the 2016 CS
Autumn Classic International, Hanyu became the first skater in history to
successfully land a quadruple loop in competition. He is the first men's
singles skater from Asia to win multiple World Championships.
