Supporting Small Business Success

The document summarizes three sources that discuss issues related to small businesses and government regulation. The first source is a 2012 report from the National League of Cities that outlines how cities can support small businesses through partnerships and other initiatives. The second source is a 2013 article that argues government regulation negatively impacts small businesses by limiting business owners' autonomy. The third source is a 1982 peer-reviewed article citing a survey that found business owners viewed regulations from agencies like OSHA and EPA as burdensome.

A developed article:

The very first source I have is a textbook/pdf article. It is by National League of

Cities/Center for Research and Innovation which is a PDF file stating many ways a small

business works and runs properly/successfully. The title of the article is called Supporting

Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses so therefore it helps us know that they are going to be

talking about how things can be made successfully out of a small business. So overall the article

is talking about how we as a big city/country can help keep up the need for small businesses

and people who like to start something for themselves. Those type of things matter because it

gives authicinity to the place we call home. This article is broken down into several main points

because it wants you to understand the development of small businesses as well as the role

they play within their city. It also talks about key partners for small businesses because a lot of

times there is some type of partnership connection to get a small business off the group and

started. Whether it is partnerships to promote your business or giving other businesses your

cards to handout to people. A lot of time there is some type of partnership. Those are the three

main topics covered that they break down into great detail throughout the article as well as show

graphs that help you see firm size and small business proportions etc. This article really helps

understand the depth at which the development of small businesses occur and their importance.

I feel as though this article had authors that really helped capture the truth about small

businesses because it gave both sides to the story. They stated very factual information instead
of opinions whether they believed in what they were having to state or not. I felt as though it was

a reliable source of information and they were not subjective as to the information they put in the

source. Overall it is a website published by an organization but by reading through this you can

easily gain the knowledge they are giving to you because it is filled with different situations and

how businesses are affected. The audience throughout this is anyone I feel as though is

interested in starting a small business or anyone that has a small business and is trying to gain

knowledge about how to better it for themselves. It has compared with the other sources

because this one does not have previous people speaking that have had small business

experience. This is very factual based and based off things that have been observed. Overall it

fit my research very well, because it gave me the perfect information needed. It gave me the

correct information to help support my argument and my side of how I felt about the small

business work. It allowed me to see it from the side of partnerships, city views, economics etc. I

also just enjoyed reading this source because as a business major it gave me a lot of good

insight on being an entrepreneur.

A reliable website:

Shane, Scott. “Small Business’s Problem with Government Regulation.” Small Business Trends,

July 26, 2013.

www.smallbiztrends.com/2011/01/small-business%E2%80%99s-problem-with-governme

nt-regulation.html Accessed February 12, 2019.

This source is a reliable website that I used a lot throughout my Topic Proposal. This article is

coming from the position of why regulation from the government is bad on small businesses.

Throughout creating my topic proposal, I had to be able to research both sides of it to

understand why certain decisions are put into place. The main topics it gave us to try and
understand the negative impact is the problem that poor showing is causing and why regulation

by the government overall is having a negative effect on the small businesses. The overview of

this source is understanding why small business owners and people that have a special place

with small businesses therefore do not like government regulation because it makes the

business overall not have a lot of the values the owner wants it to have. Corporate level

businesses and small business cannot be ran the same way and have the same type of positive

impact. One of the businesses would take a negative hit and it is the small businesses when it

comes to government regulation. Overall, there is one author for this source and by reading this

article it seems like he has had a lot of experience with understanding how business owners feel

about the government regulation. He seems to be very biased in what he is stating throughout

his source and the information he is giving to support his claims. He might have had personal

experiences to where he feels differently than how people who have not had experience with

regulation would feel. Throughout this website, it states a lot about how the government

regulation had a negative effect on businesses so therefore, it is very one sided. But it is not one

sided to where it sounds like it is based off opinions, it is one sided but has very factual

information. I felt as though the quality of this source was very effective in the information it gave

me. It seemed very reliable and seemed as though it had gathered its information from more

than one small business. The website is a website that is published by an association.

Throughout this website it was a little difficult for me to pick out an intended audience but I

believe that the audience would be any type of small business owner because this is an article

where they are trying to look out for owners and allow their businesses to still run on the values

they instilled in it. Overall, compared to the other two sources this was one I really relied on to

try and see the negative impact the government had on a business because it was a very one

sided article, not a mutual sided article. This was a very usefulness article for me and I
thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It fit into my research because like I said before it gave a one

sided view to the topic which helped me really zone in on key points. That is why I believe it

helped me shape my argument because I am on the side of the topic that thinks government

regulation is bad for small businesses so this article was perfect. It helped me take a look at my

other sources in a different light because those sources were mutually sided. I will for sure use

this in my project because it is exactly how I feel about the issue.

This source that is listed above is a peer reviewed source I found through our UNC Charlotte

library databases online while doing my topic proposal. This article states things from the

position of how with government regulation there are a lot more certifications you have to go

through to be able to be a proper small business. For example, EPA, ICC, OSHA, etc, those are

all things that you have to go through when being a small business but still being regulated by

the government. The articles main points were how based on a survey people said that the

associations listed above were very troublesome and it was not a pleasing experience. If

someone were to come up to me and asked me what this article was about I would state to

them how people believe that all the government regulated associations allow a small business

to legally be a small business are very troublesome based off the business owners and their

experiences. The article also talks about increased debt and loans because of these
associations. This source has two authors and it is a very reliable source. It is fact based

instead of opinion based as well as states very many facts to help support their claim. The

article is a popular article I found through the library but it is a very high quality article. It is an

article I can read and feel as though the information I am reading is still true. It was published by

the International Council for Small Business so overall it is a popular source. The purpose of this

communication and source is for small business owners which is also the intended audience to

see all the things that are causing trouble and pressure to being a small business owner.

Compared to the other sources in my bibliography it did not give me near as much information

but the information it gave me was still very useful. I wish I would have found more information

throughout the source just because it would have allowed me to see how OSHA, ICC, EPA and

other associations really affect the small businesses. It was the source I used the least overall

because it had the least amount of information but it was still very helpful on giving me another

view of what happened with small businesses and how they were regulated.
