PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION B.E. (MECHANICAL) A.Y 2018-19

ENERGY ENGINEERING
[Time: 60 min] [Marks: 30 Marks]
[Day: Monday] [Date: 01/04/2019]
Instructions to Candidates
1) Solve Q1 or Q2, Q3 or Q4, Q5 or Q6.
2) Figures to the right indicate full marks
3) Use of Electronic pocket calculator is allowed.
Q.1 (a) Draw a typical layout of Diesel power station and explain. 05
(b) A four stroke diesel engine consumes 20 kg/hr. When the engine 05
develops an output of 80 kW. Calculate the brake and indicated
specific fuel consumption, if the mechanical efficiency of the engine is
80%. Also, determine the brake and indicated thermal efficiencies if
the calorific value of the fuel is 45000 kJ/kg.
OR
Q.2 In a gas turbine power plant air enters in compressor at 20°C and 1bar. 10
The maximum temperature of cycle is limited to 700° C and maximum
pressure ratio is limited to 6. The effectiveness of regenerator is 0.7.
Assuming following data find:
i) A:F ration ii) Thermal efficiency of cycle.
Calorific value of fuel used 35000 kJ/kg. Cp of air 1 KJ/kgK and ɤ=1.4
Sketch the flow diagram and represent cycle on T-S plot.

Q.3 (a) Explain parabolic solar collectors with neat diagrams. 05

OR
Q.4 (a) Explain single basin and double basin tidal power plant with neat 05
diagrams.
Write a note on : Challenges in commercialization of Non
(b) 05
Conventional Power Plants.
Q.5 (a) Explain with neat sketch load curve. 05
(b) Discuss method of determining the depreciation of electric power plants. 05
OR
Discuss the performance of power plant considering input output
Q.6 (a) 05
curve, efficiency load curve.
(b) From following data calculate cost of generation per unit delivered 05
from the power plant.
Installed capacity of power plant = 200 MW,
Annual load factor = 0.4, Capital cost of power plant = Rs. 280 Lacs,
Annual cost of fuel, oil, salaries and taxation = Rs. 60 Lacs
Interest and depreciation = 13%
