GUIDELINES FOR ENTERING UNMANNED MACHINERY SPACES

COPY TO BE POSTED AT EACH ENTRANCE TO THE MACHINERY SPACES AND THE ELEVATOR

ENTRY RESTRICTED TO AUTHORISED PERSONNEL ONLY

IMPORTANT
THIS NOTICE APPLIES TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE VESSEL’S CREW AND ALL OTHER
PERSONNEL AUTHORISED TO BE ONBOARD THE VESSEL.

A PERSON SHOULD ONLY ENTER OR REMAIN IN AN UNMANNED MACHINERY SPACE ALONE


IF:
1. HE HAS RECEIVED PERMISSION FROM THE ENGINEER OFFICER IN CHARGE AT THE TIME.
2. HE HAS BEEN INSTRUCTED TO DO SO BY THE ENGINEER OFFICER IN CHARGE AT THE TIME.
SEE NOTE “A” BELOW.

ANY PERSONNEL, THIS INCLUDES THE DUTY ENGINEER OFFICER, ENTERING THE UNMANNED
MACHINERY SPACES MUST BE FAMILIAR WITH THE VESSEL’S COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS
AND MUST REPORT BY TELEPHONE (OR WALKIE-TALKIE) TO THE DUTY DECK OFFICER AT
THE FOLLOWING TIMES :

1. BEFORE ENTERING THE SPACE.


2. AT REGULAR INTERVALS NOT EXCEEDING 30 MINUTES, WHILST IN THE SPACE.
3. ON LEAVING THE SPACE.

NOTE “A”
CREW MEMBERS OR OTHER AUTHORISED PERSONNEL MAY ONLY BE INSTRUCTED (OR
ALLOWED) TO ENTER AN UNMANNED MACHINERY SPACE ALONE WHEN HE IS REQUIRED TO
CARRY OUT A SPECIFIC TASK WHICH HE MAY BE EXPECTED TO COMPLETE IN A
COMPARATIVELY SHORT TIME.
NO PERSONNEL SHOULD ATTEMPT TO CARRY OUT ANY TASK, OR CORRECT A DEFECT, THAT
IS BEYOND HIS UNAIDED CAPABILITY.
BEFORE INSTRUCTING ANY PERSONNEL TO ENTER THE UNMANNED MACHINERY SPACE
ALONE IT IS TO BE CONFIRMED THAT THEY FULLY UNDERSTAND THE REPORTING
REQUIREMENTS STIPULATED ABOVE.

WARNING
UNMANNED MACHINERY SPACEMACHINERY MAY START UP
AUTOMATICALLY WITHOUT ANY PRIOR WARNING
