Condition Monitoring Inspection
Condition monitoring inspection is a preventive maintenance tool to identify Electrical faults in
overhead transmission line, Switch racks, HV & LV switch boards & Transformer etc.. in very
minor stage. The inspection is divided in to three different formats.
o Thermoscan Inspection
o Corona Discharge Inspection
o Partial Discharge test
Thermography / Thermoscan
Thermography or Thermoscan is a technique or technology to read & record the temperature
emitting by an object without physical contact. Thermoscan is been used for various
applications like Medical, defense, Electrical & some monitoring process.
Corona discharge
Corona Discharge (also known as the Corona Effect) is an electrical discharge caused by the
ionization of a fluid such as air surrounding a conductor that is electrically charged. The corona
effect will occur in high voltage systems.
The corona effect occurs naturally due to the fact that air is not a perfect insulator – containing
many free electrons and ions under normal conditions. When an electric field is established in
the air between two conductors, the free ions and electrons in the air will experience a force.
Due to this effect, the ions and free electrons get accelerated and moved in the opposite
direction.
The charged particles during their motion collide with one another and also with slow‐moving
uncharged molecules. Thus the number of charged particles increases rapidly. If the electric field
is strong enough, a dielectric breakdown of air will occur and an arc will form between the
conductors.
Partial Discharge
Partial Discharge is an electrical discharge that occurs across a localized area of the insulation
between two conducting electrodes, without completely bridging the gap. It can be caused by
discontinuities or imperfections in the insulation system. PD testing thus gives an indication of
deterioration of the insulation and is an indicator of incipient faults. In general PD will occur in
systems operating at voltages of 3000 V and above; it should be noted though that in some
cases PD can also occur at lower voltages.
PD can occur at various points in the insulation system, for example: voids in the insulation
medium, at the interface between insulation layers or in gas bubbles in liquid insulation.
