Understanding Exhaust Brake Functionality

The document discusses an exhaust brake, which is an electronically controlled butterfly valve between the turbocharger and exhaust hose that regulates exhaust temperature. The exhaust brake activates during low-load applications to keep the exhaust temperature high enough to prevent sulfur deposits on the SCR catalyst, helping to maintain catalyst efficiency and avoid NOx errors. It does this by modulating the exhaust valve to control temperature. The system also tracks accumulated sulfur levels and initiates continuous desulfurization processes when levels exceed thresholds.

Exhaust Brake 101 Slide 1

Basic functionality clarification

Exhaust brake is an electronically controlled
butterfly valve that sits between the
turbocharger and the exhaust hose.

This valve is manoeuvred with the help of

an electrically operated actuator and is used
to regulate the temperature in the exhaust
system as per the requirement.

At temperatures lower than

300°C in the exhaust system, a
layer of sulphur starts
depositing on the SCR catalyst.
This reduce the catalyst
efficiency and can thereby
generate a High NOx code.

Exhaust brake intelligently

controls the exhaust
temperature and keep the
catalyst clean from Sulphur.

activate in low-load
applications, where the
temperature in the exhaust do
not come up to the required
levels.
