Understanding Photosynthesis Process

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to produce oxygen and glucose/sugar. It occurs in chloroplasts and involves trapping sunlight using chlorophyll, combining carbon dioxide and water to make glucose and oxygen, and storing the glucose for energy. The overall reaction is that sunlight, carbon dioxide and water are converted into glucose/sugar and oxygen.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS

 Comes from the Greek word, phōs meaning “light” and synthesis meaning "putting together".
 Photosynthesis is a process by which plants prepare their own food by converting light energy into
chemical energy and storing it in the bonds of sugar.
 Sunlight + Carbon Dioxide + Water = Glucose/Sugar + Oxygen
3 Things plants need to live:
1. Sunlight – provides energy for the plants
2. Carbon Dioxide
3. Water
-Plants use sunlight as energy, they get water from rain, and they get carbon dioxide from breathing. The
process of taking these three key ingredients and making them into food is called photosynthesis.
Process of Photosynthesis:
Step 1: The chlorophyll traps the sunlight in the leaves.
Chlorophyll is the chemical that makes the plant’s leaves green and traps sunlight in the chloroplasts.
Step 2: Change light from the sun and gives the plant energy to start the food-making process.
Step 3: Roots will take nutrients up to the leaves and then leaves mix carbon dioxide, the nutrients and water to
make their food. Product: Glucose/sugar
Step 4: Plants release their waste. And that is the oxygen that we breath.

The overall chemical reaction involved in Photosynthesis is:

This is the source of oxygen that we breath.

*for shorter explanation:

STEPS
1. Chloroplasts trap light energy
2. Water enters leaf through the roots
3. Carbon dioxide enters leaf through stomata
4. Glucose/Sugar leaves leaf. The extra glucose produced is stored by the plant in the form of starch for later use
