Rizal’s First Romance
-A sixteen year old Rizal fell in love with a Segunda
Katigbak, a pretty fourteen year old from Batanguena
and the sister of his friend.
-A love at first sight
-He got to know her more in La Concordia College.
-Unfortunately, Segunda was already engaged to her
townmate, Manuel Luz but it was clear that Segunda
loved Rizal back.
-They talked one last time on a Thursday, in December.
-They said their goodbyes. After a while, Rizal found
out that the transport of Segunda’s journey will not
land in its designated area. Rizal hurried to that place
just to wave his hat to her as she waved her
handkerchief to him. She eventually married Manuel
Luz while Rizal was left at home, an already hopeless
romantic.
-Three Years Later, he made a poem dedicated to his
first love.
