Methods of

Speaking
Impromptu Speech

 Itis a speech where the

development of both the ideas and
the language is thought out only at
the moment of delivery.

- knowing various subject

beforehand
- think fast
Advantage
- gives naturalness and
removes artificiality.
Theoretically, it would be better.
Disadvantage
- usually rambling,
repetitious and disorganized.
Extemporaneous Speech
 Speech where the ideas are
prepared but the language is
definitely composed at the moment
of delivery
 It stands somewhere impromptu
and read speeches
 Delivered whether with or without
notes
Advantage
- It has time to prepare.
The speech has some
spontaneity and naturalness
Disadvantage
- the language is not as
clear as memorized speech.
Precision in language is
lacking.
Read Speech
 Speech that is written out and read word
for word during delivery.
 Done during important historical events.
 Presented together with copies of speech
distributed in the crowd and in the press.
 Usually made by prominent persons who
do not have time to make several
speeches (rise of ghost writer, in the Phil
context).
 Ghost writing vs plagiarism
 Advantage
- presentation is usually smooth and formal. Often
flawless.
 Disadvantage
- the speech becomes boring. (Audience sees the
manuscript being read)
- a good speaker can make a read speech sound
like an extemporaneous
 Preparation
- the preparation is not a problem, but it needs
researching
 Delivery
- you might be talking to the manuscript rather than
to the audience
- delivery is all in the eye contact, you should not
be reading the last line just look into the audience
- you can insert various phrases
Memorized Speech
 Speech that is committed entirely to
memory and delivered from memory
 Should be done sparingly due to inability
of human memory to memorize entirely
 The audience would know when it is
memorized, on the eye movement, on
the tone and phase of delivery
 The Marcos myth
 Advantage
- with precision, organization, beauty and depth of
language
 Disadvantage
- lacks spontaneity and naturalness; humans can
easily forget
 Preparation
- among all speeches, read speech needs the most
preparation
- needs to understand the speech and then read
and read and read. During practice needs prompter
- need to continuously remind himself with the
speech
 Delivery
- NVC are also memorized
