BS 5628-1 Code of practice for the use of masonry - Part 1: Structural use of unreinforced masonry.
Type 1—Suitable for most masonry walls and most building sizes and types on nearly all sites. Not very flexible so cannot be
adjusted or accommodate differential movement between leaves. Performance can also be determined by calculation.

Approved Document E: Resistance to the passage of sound

Tie Type B. Dynamic stiffness < 113MN/m3 at tie density of 2.5 ties/m2 at a 75mm working cavity.

Features
Masonry guide marks on the body of the tie allow an easy visual check on tie embedment and cavity width.
―TOP‖ indicates the correct way up.
Water drips spaced across the cavity section allow the tie to be used in insulated or open cavities.
Safety ends reduce the risk of injury during handling and installation.
Light weight making installation quick, easy and economical.

Installation
Code of practice BS 5628-1 states that walls that have leaves 90mm or thicker should include wall ties at not less than 2.5 ties per
m2. Stagger wall ties in alternate courses at 900mm horizontal and 450mm vertical spacings. If least leaf thickness is less than
90mm, increase the number of ties to 4.9 ties per m 2 by reducing horizontal spacing to 450mm. Wall ties adjacent to openings in
masonry panels, vertical movement joint locations or non returned edges should be positioned at a maximum 300mm vertical spacing
and no more than 225mm away from the opening. The PT1 tie should be bedded the nominal 62.5mm shown by the integral
masonry guide marks and the correct way up, into fresh mortar at the time of the wall construction. The cavity spanning section of the
tie is to be kept free of mortar.

Accessories
The PT1 Type 1 Wall Tie can be used in conjunction with the Expamet Building Products SSCD insulation retaining clip. The cavity
spanning section is uniform enabling the insulation clip to be positioned at any given point so that different thicknesses of insulation
can be used.

2 PART TIE

Tie Reference Application

2PTF—- Female tie to suit insulation thickness

2PTM—- Male tie to suit structural cavity width

1.4301 Austenitic Stainless Steel to BS EN 10088-2 : 2005.

Tie parts supplied individually.

Walls with wide cavities require longer wall ties which create a potentially hazardous projection and are susceptible to
sagging when only one leaf is built.
The power-tie two part tie overcomes these concerns by minimising the wall tie projection until the installation of the
male tie extension when the second leaf is built.

The power-tie two part tie consists of female 2PTF and male 2PTM components whose combinations cater for nominal
cavity widths between 150mm and 400mm.
The selection of components is based on the structural cavity width and the insulation thickness as shown below:

2 PART TIE

Features
The 2 Part Tie lowers the Health and Safety risk and reduces the sagging effect of unsupported long wall ties.
Integral embedment and ―TOP‖ markings for correct installation.
Female ties are available in lengths of 175mm, reference 2PTF175 to suit insulation up to 50mm thick and 200mm, ref-
erence 2PTF200 to suit insulation up to 75mm thick. This ensures space for an insulation retaining clip and clearance
outside of the insulation to carry out the simple connection process:
Male tie projection lengths are available from 100mm to 375mm in 25mm increments, references 2PTM100 to 2PTM375
to suit cavities up to 400mm wide.

Installation
Code of practice BS 5628-1 states that walls that have leaves 90mm or thicker should include wall ties at not less than
2.5 ties per m2. Expamet recommend that wall ties are installed at 600mm horizontal and 450mm vertical spacing,
staggered in alternate courses.
Wall ties adjacent to openings in masonry panels, vertical movement joint locations or non returned edges should be
positioned at a maximum 300mm vertical spacing and no more than 225mm away from the opening.
Alternative tie spacing may be specified by the Designer.

The 2 Part Tie is installed within bed joints that will be built at the same level across the cavity.

The female section is built first into the inner leaf the correct way up with 75mm embedment, as identified by the integral
markings. The male section is attached when building the outer leaf.
Both sections of the tie must be bedded into fresh mortar at the time of the wall construction ensuring the cavity span-
ning part of the tie is kept free of mortar.

Connection of the male to female sections is a simple insert, twist and level of the male section.

Accessories
The 2PT Wall Tie can be used in conjunction with the Expamet Building Products SSCD insulation retaining clip.

SPECIFICATION
DATA SHEET
BAT ENGINEERING WINDPOSTS
Designed to offer lateral restraint to masonry panels

Material
1.4301 Austenitic Stainless Steel to BS EN 10088-1 : 2005.

Standards and Conformity

Complies with:
Cavity wall ties comply with BS EN 845-1 Specification For Ancillary Components in Masonry - Part 1.1 :Ties, tension
straps, hangers and brackets

Profiles
Windpost profiles are selected on load bearing capacity and installation requirements.
U section profiles are built within the cavity.
H Section windposts serve the same purpose as the U section post whilst allowing for heavy duty applications.
L section windposts are built into the inner leaf of masonry with the short leg projecting into the cavity.
Spine section windposts are generally used for internal fair faced walls, usually 20mm less than the wall width.

Features
BAT Windposts are manufactured on a plasma cutter which produces smooth edges. The base plate and the top of
the windpost have rounded corners which further ensures safe handling on site. The slotted head cleat allows
±35mm adjustment which allows for dimensional variations in the structure, differential movement and also acts as a
deflection head. Base and top cleat connections are designed specific to each project. A selection of section sizes
are offered to resist the applied wind loading. All BAT Windposts will be delivered to site with the identification
number etched on. The number can be used in conjunction with any layout drawings that have been supplied to aid
location and installation. The fixings and the wall ties for the Windpost are bagged and attached to it in the factory
which will minimise time on site. The palletised delivery will be clearly labelled making location and on-site
distribution quick and easy.

Installation
The Windpost is to be fixed to the structure using the supplied fixings. It is essential to the performance of the
windpost that all fixings are tightened to the correct torque. When fixing to concrete careful consideration should be
applied to ensure the correct depth hole is drilled, a separate data sheet is included in the fixings bag. Only fixings
supplied with the Windpost are to be used. The windpost is to be installed vertically and should be checked before
building it in to make sure it is plumb in both planes. The wall ties are to be fitted to the windpost utilising the slotted
holes. The length of the cavity wall ties will be designed to achieve an embedment depth of 62.5mm, with a minimum
depth of 50mm. The shear tie is designed to be positioned towards the centre of the block work inner leaf.
Where the Windpost is to be connected to a steel structure it will be supplied with Xylan coated bolts and washers
along with a neoprene isolation patch. BAT Windposts can also be fixed to timber wall plates, in such cases the
Windpost will be supplied with coach screws.

Accessories
BAT Windposts can be used in conjunction with the Expamet Building Products SSCD insulation
retaining clip. The section of the tie is uniform enabling the insulation clip to be positioned at any
given point so that different thicknesses of insulation can be used.

Masonry Support Specification

Expamet masonry support systems can be specified as follows:

MS100/3.5/T

This code will specify a system to suit a 100mm cavity, to carry 3.5 metres of masonry (7kN) fixed to a
concrete slab using 38/17 cast in channel.

Below is a list of abbreviations that can be used to specify possible designs :

I = Inverted system
IA = Inverted angle
IIA = Inverted system and inverted angle.
TC = Top cleat fixed system
D = Angle drop below the soffit of the bracket
P = Bracket projecting below the soffit of the structure.
C36 = Support angle to have welded 36/8 channel to the underside. Supplied c/w hanger ties.
Ren120 = Specifies that the system is supporting rendered blockwork, 120mm for example. This is the
total wall thickness including the applied render.

T = T-head bolt fixing

S = Setscrew fixing
R = resin bolt fixing
BB = Blindbolt fixing
E = Expansion bolt fixing.

Masonry Support Installation Guide
MASONRY SUPPORT
SYSTEMS

Ensure that the adjustment plate is located at

the top of the side slots within the bracket.

Installation

Expamet Construction masonry support systems can be designed to suit concrete or steel frame structures. To allow for
on site tolerance the system offers adjustment vertically, horizontally and laterally. It is vital that a compressible
horizontal movement joint is allowed directly under the support angle location to allow for vertical expansion of the
masonry wall. Pistol bricks are generally used at the masonry support system location when using facing bricks.

Vertical Adjustment
Vertical adjustment is offered by means of the Expamet Construction adjustment plate. This plate is inserted through the
side slots in the support bracket. The plate can be adjusted sideways to move the bracket higher or lower by 20mm, the
plate can be inverted to achieve this. It is important that the adjustment plate is located at the top of the side slots
within the bracket.

Cavity Adjustment
Any increase in the cavity size can be allowed for by using stainless steel packing shims, these are positioned between
the structure and the support bracket. The maximum amount of shimming is limited to the diameter of the bolt or 16mm,
whichever is less. The shims must be the correct height and must be at least flush with the bottom of the bracket, no
more than three shims should be used on each bracket. It is important to ensure that the masonry wall is sat onto the
support angle by a minimum of two thirds of the width of the wall, or in accordance with any Expamet Construction
layout drawings supplied. Any decrease in cavity size can be accommodated by building the wall further back on the
angle, thus increasing the amount of bearing onto the support angle. In certain cases the wall may need to be cut to
avoid the support angle bend radius.

MASONRY SUPPORT
SYSTEMS

Horizontal Adjustment
Masonry support systems are designed to have a 10mm gap between the adjoining angle. This allows for horizontal
adjustment of the system during installation. Horizontal adjustment is introduced when fixing to steel frame buildings by
way of horizontal slots, when fixing to concrete a continuous horizontal cast in channel is recommended. Masonry
support systems are designed to span vertical movement joints in the outer wall, however if these coincide with a
structural construction joint the support system will terminate before the joint.

Fixings
Only the fixings supplied with the masonry support system are to be used. These will be delivered to site with the system
and are securely fastened to each support piece. The installation of the fixings needs to be strictly in accordance with
the Expamet Construction bolt installation guides supplied with each project. The site layout drawings also supplied
need to be closely observed to ensure that the correct edge distances are achieved.

Avoidance of Bi-Metallic Corrosion

All Expamet Construction masonry support systems are manufactured from grade 1.4301 (BS EN 10088-2) as standard.
Grade 1.4401 stainless steel can be provided for corrosive environments.
Bi-Metallic corrosion can occur if stainless steel and mild steel come into contact where water is present, this can
accelerate the corrosion rate of the mild steel.
To Avoid Bi-Metallic corrosion when this type of masonry support system is designed to fix to mild steel structures it is
supplied with isolation membranes, Xylan coated bolts and washers. Care should be taken to ensure that each item is
installed in the correct position, as noted on the bolt installation guides supplied for the project.

Wall Ties.
Stainless steel wall ties must be provided at a recommended maximum horizontal spacing of 450mm and within 300mm
above and below the masonry support system. These are essential to the correct working of the masonry support
system and ensure that the load is transferred onto the support angle as expected.

All Expamet Construction masonry support systems are a bespoke design based on information received during the
design period. Items must not be amended or adjusted on site. If an item is not suitable for any reason please contact
the Expamet Construction technical department.
The site layout drawings supplied with each masonry support system must be followed to ensure that the correct system
is installed as designed and so as not to overload the systems.

design team, each system is designed using bespoke calculation software. A site layout plan will be issued for approval
prior to manufacture. All BAT Masonry Support systems will be delivered to site with the identification number clearly
marked on each piece. The number can be used in conjunction with any layout drawings that have been supplied to aid
location and installation. The BAT Masonry support also has factory applied polyethylene foam joint filler, helping to
speed up the site installation process. The fixings for the system are bagged and attached to it in the factory which will
not only minimise time on site but will ensure that the correct fixings are used. The palletised delivery will be clearly
labelled making location and on-site distribution quick and easy.
Horizontal adjustment can be achieved by using shims. When using shims please note that a combined thickness of
12mm or the fixing diameter should not be exceeded whichever is less. No more than three shims should be used on
each bracket. Vertical adjustment is provided by the Expamet Construction adjustment plate, the plate can be adjusted
sideways to move the bracket higher or lower by 20mm.

Manufacturing Tolerances

The tolerances shown below are to BS EN 1090-2-2008, Class 1.

The maximum amount of allowable bow is expressed as L/500 or 5mm minimum.

Bow Limitations Masonry Support

As stated above the minimum amount of bow is 5mm, due to the length of masonry support angles
generally being less than 1500mm the allowable bow per angle will be 5mm.

Bow Limitations Windposts

Again due to the above the amount of allowable bow for windposts under 2500mm is 5mm per post.
For windposts longer than 2500mm please see below.

3000mm long = 6mm

3500mm long = 7mm
4000mm long = 8mm
4500mm long = 9mm
5000mm long = 10mm
5500mm long = 11mm
6000mm long = 12mm

General Tolerances
Length= ±5mm
Slot/hole centre = ±2mm
Length of angle/channel leg = ±5mm
Angular = ±3°
Twist = L/700 (minimum 4mm to maximum 20mm)
Bracket spacing’s ±5mm
