First Mass

The document discusses the site of the first Catholic mass in the Philippines. It was held on March 31, 1521 in either Butuan or Limasawa, as these two places have been a subject of historical controversy. The mass was led by Ferdinand Magellan and marked the beginning of Roman Catholicism in the country. Antonio Pigafetta, an Italian explorer who traveled with Magellan, recorded the event in his diary and maps. Scholars have debated whether Pigafetta's documentation refers to Butuan or Limasawa as the specific island where the mass took place.
