Shingle Technology in Solar Cells

The shingle technology is a cell connection technology used in SunPower solar panels that replaces traditional solder ribbons. It connects solar cells using a conductive adhesive into strings that are then connected and laminated together with no gaps between cells. This allows for more cells to be placed on each panel, increasing efficiency by over 13% compared to traditional designs. It also greatly reduces line losses and improves output power by optimizing the panel structure and eliminating solder ribbons.

Overlap technology

1. Introduction to shingle technology

*The overlap technology is a unique and patented component packaging technology of SunPower
in the United States. One of its core technologies lies in the unique cell connection technology,
which replaces the solder ribbon in the traditional technology and can be based on traditional
technology. Improve the connection between the cells to ensure the reliability of the battery
connection.
2. The principle of shingle technology

2.1 Principle structure diagram

After the solar cell is sliced, the solar cells are connected in a string by a special conductive
adhesive, and the laminated piece is connected, so that the front and rear two solar cells have no
gap.

2.2 tiling battery connection

The slicing technique redesigns the cell grid lines into a pattern that can be reasonably cut into
small pieces, so that the positive and negative electrodes of each piece after cutting are in
accordance with the design process of the overlap solar panels.
Weld each small piece into a string, and abandon the traditional strip-connected battery
structure, and then string the string into a component after serial-parallel typesetting, so that the
gap in the component can be fully utilized, and the conventional area can be placed more than
conventional. More than 13% of the components of the battery, and due to the optimization of
the structure of this component, the use of no solder ribbon design, greatly reducing the line loss
of the component, greatly improving the output power of the component.

3. The advantages of shingle technology

3.1 Traditional component grid connection defects

The bus bar connection structure is used between the traditional component cells, and the use
of a large number of bus bars increases the internal loss of the components and reduces the
component conversion efficiency. At the same time, the difference of the single cell slices is in
the series structure, and the reverse current affects the components. Increase, resulting in hot
spot effects that damage components and even affect the operation of the entire photovoltaic
system.

3.2 The advantages of shingle technology

a. Eliminate shadow masking of the soldering strip to increase current density;

b. reduce the gap before the battery;

c. Reduce the heat loss of the strip resistance;

d. The dicing design reduces the battery string current, and the overall operating current is
reduced to effectively reduce the ohmic heat loss.
