Reflection in Self Defense
I have learned so much about this class and it shouldn’t be taken so lightly. I hope that I won’t be in a
situation wherein I will be doing this stuff but the more I know, the better prepared I am to handle things if
something violent really does happen to me in the future. The teachings are very straightforward and can be
understood easily but doing the actions correctly and seriously is actually harder than it looks. It may seem
sometimes over the top but if one is not performing it correctly it could honestly be the difference between you being
dragged by the criminal or escaping from them.
Strengthening ourselves physically, mentally and emotionally are the aspects that I have learned from this
class because the saying “Knowledge is Power” certainly applies to it perfectly. Before this class started, I haven’t
had a self defense class in my life and this has truly changed one of my perspectives. I may be small but that doesn’t
stop you from learning things especially when defending oneself. Though I may not memorize all the techniques
taught to us but I can say that doing this kind of activity really made me think about what I should do in a crisis and
this can certainly help.
Attitude was first brought up to us because this activity is not a thing to be lightly taken. Your life depends
onyour actions and how you take it. It doesn’t depend on others and it should be done by yourself. Having the
attitude really makes a difference because if you don’t have the right attitude then I can say that what you are
learning will already fail to you not in grades but to yourself. Firstly, discipline here is brought up because if one
doesn’t have control on one’s actions then how can you properly do this activity. Discipline is certainly necessary here
because it saves time, maximizes learning and gives us the proper mindset on what to do and what to expect and it
also gives us the right thinking pattern when doing this kind of activity. Secondly is the courage, one should steel
oneself in order to do this because if you don’t have the courage to defend yourself then you leave yourself to
vulnerable to the action of others. It may be easy to say to yourself that you are courageous but actually doing it
properly and hurting someone really takes up courage because it is not within us to hurt people deliberately and we
tend to avoid things first than confront it instead. This should serve as the basis of how you carry yourself in this
activity because if one is not courageous then I can say that this will not help you in the future. Lastly, one should
always be keen and alert. Being able to spot danger first and moving away from them is the best thing to be doing
instead of making yourself vulnerable and then apply self defense. If you already spot a dangerous situation first
before it really happens then you could acutally avoid it by doing the appropriate measures. Self defense isn’t all
about protecting yourself from the actual danger that is happening but if you can already spot the danger then that
is the most effective way of using self defense.
Proper technique and motions have been hard in this class but without doing them appropriately we cannot
be sure in the future that if we do it in an actual situation it would be totally effective. Doing the motions is
challenging I can say the least because it would take up a lot of effort, concentration and strength when doing it and
it would even become harder in the actual scenario. But performing them correctly gives me motivation to do it even
better even though I know that it will take even a long time to become better at this.
I am willing to improve myself because I know in the long run it will only benefit myself and that it would
just make me a better person. The challenge of always improving oneself is hard but with proper mindset and
determination I can achieve this without doubting myself. It always starts with the small steps before taking the big
ones and a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.
Everything is hard when you start but it gradually becomes easier to do once you got the hang of it. Just
moving forward will lead me to a better and brighter future and this activity is one of those steps of me being better
and also lets me become secure and safe.
The activities are fun and I hope I get to learn more of it so that I can improve myself for the better and
everything that I learned not only in self defense but also in attitude in life would propel me to the betterness of my
future.
