Closing the Digital Divide with Tech

Project Loon from Alphabet X uses hot air balloons to provide wireless internet access in remote areas by creating aerial hotspots. The balloons were launched in Puerto Rico after a natural disaster destroyed infrastructure, leaving millions without internet or a way to contact family. Drones and white space technology, which broadcasts over unused channels, are also emerging methods to close the digital divide and expand connectivity, especially for rural communities.

Two emerging technologies that can help close the Digital divide

Project loon Alphabet x is using hot air balloons to create a wireless hot spot in the sky for those who
don’t have internet access. The balloons are being launched in Puerto Rico after the natural disaster that
occurred leaving 3.5 million people without access to the internet or a connection to family. The
balloons helped in this time of need because the cell towers down in Puerto Rico.

internet-connectivity

The use of Drones is helping to give access to those who cannot get the internet. Microsoft is also using
White Spaces, it’s a technology that allows them to broadcast on an unused channel that will help with
connectivity. Due to the low power for this technology it can cover long distances and help in rural areas
as well.
